With the recent outbreak of AFM in the United States, a polio-like illness causing disease in children, it’s wise to give some special prayer-attention to the protection of your children from catching such a disease.
We are never helpless in the face of disease! Spiritual steps can be taken to neutralize disease and prevent it from having a bad effect.
Disease first forms as a belief, or fear, before it appears as a physical condition. To keep the suggestion of disease out of consciousness, is to keep it out of the body.
The purpose of prayer is to have thought so strongly garrisoned with Truth and Love, that there is no room in consciousness for suggestions of disease to enter, either consciously or unconsciously.
I find it helpful to remember that children are not helpless, vulnerable creatures susceptible to whatever mortal mind comes up with. Children are spiritual creations of God, who were created to express the Life of God without fail.
God’s children are not sponges soaking in mortal fears, but spiritual rays of light reflecting Life, Truth and Love.
In Truth, children are not liable to disease. They are capable only of enduring health, vitality, strength and wellness.
Knowing the spiritual truth about children defends them from the belief that disease is possible. It protects them from unknown harm, and keeps them healthy. And for those children who are struggling with the condition now, prayer can reverse their suffering and bring them their right to freedom.
Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Evil thoughts and aims reach no farther and do no more harm than one’s belief permits”
(Science and Health, p. 234).
Be sure to deny all permission to any suggestions of disease in your home! It’s the healthier and safer way to live.

I do not understand why you would name a disease in this post. I understand and appreciate the truth you share about protection for children and the truth of their spiritual nature. But why put a name and identity to a disease? Disease is error, a lie. Error is never real, never has an identity and never true no matter what material world description tries to set it apart as something more significant than any other error.

Why name a disease? It’s so I can talk intelligently with my audience. One cannot be vague to get a specific point across. Mary Baker Eddy named numerous diseases in her work Science and Health, so that her reader could understand what she was talking about. She even wrote that in some cases, a practitioner, when arguing a case for Truth, should get the name of a disease so that he can specifically denounce it. So, have no fear a a disease name! As you mention, it’s another name for error. But I needed to name the disease in this post so that my readers understood what I was talking about, as reported in the current news. In researching the word perfection last week found this by Mrs. Eddy in Mis. Writings:
The star that looked lovingly down on the manger of our Lord, lends its resplendent light to this hour: the light of Truth, to cheer, guide, and bless man as he reaches forth for the infant idea of divine perfection dawning upon human imperfection, — that calms man’s fears, bears his burdens, beckons him on to Truth and Love and the sweet immunity these bring from sin, sickness, and death. Mis. 320:9. It stimulated thinking that God’s immunity is what gives us immunity. So, taking each of the synonyms, I reasoned about the immunity they provide. Mind provides immunity against fearful thoughts and doubt. Principle provides immunity against material laws. Truth’s immunity provides protection against beliefs and unreality of matter’s power. Love’s immunity protects against painful conditions. Life’s immunity protects our expression of life against untoward experiences, disease, accident, death. Soul’s immunity protects us from separation from God, good, health.etc.

thank you. I am glad you gave the initials of this new awful idea. I had been thinking about it. Having grown up with the fear of polio this situation churned up old fear. thank you for reminding us that children are not helpless and defenseless against all disease. I pray daily for those in my life that are attached in consciousness to me such as my kids, my grandchildren,and of course, my pets. Constantly clearing of my thought of fear is a daily occurrence.
Those of us, who no longer have young children, need to put our “ whole armour” on to vanquish the foe, no matter the name. Mrs Eddy felt a specific name for error would sometimes be helpful. Oh, I it just reminds me at the part in Glossary of Science and Health p. 582, where MBEddy says: “Children. The spiritual thoughts and representatives of Life, Truth, and Love.” To my understanding it relates to all children of God – adults and children – and if that is the truth and surely it is, then we express only godly qualities like all what is said – Life, Truth and Love, and added to it “Health”, as Health is spiritual. So that is very comforting! Thank you Evan, to make me think about above topic.

Thank you, Evan. I’m glad you posted this. It is not enough to simply state we are exempt from disease and ignore it. I was subjected to much talk today about disease and I think its crucial to specifically address those beliefs and defend our thought against them.
Paul says in Romans to “put on the armor of light”. So put that armour on your children. Also in Ephesians, “ now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light”. Where can scary darkness, doubt, fear, etc etc be, if all is bathed in light. Fill up the bathtub of our hearts and consciousness with light/ understanding and rejoice that God is so crazy about us!
