See beyond crisis to something better

“In the midst of a pandemic that has swept the globe and so profoundly affected people’s lives—threatening individuals’ physical and mental health, causing the loss of loved ones, straining the economy, changing the rules for social engagement, and forming an uncertain future in the minds of millions—one may wonder how to deal with such a critical situation….”

The above is my opening paragraph to a new article I wrote for the Christian Science Sentinel, published October 19, 2020.

If you’d like to read more, here’s a link to the piece, “Heaven…here on earth?”

  1. Your article is so needed now Evan. So explanatory . A loving guidance for us for inspired understandIng of the Truth of what is really going on for everyone. I particularly like the phrase “ God is the only event” I can take this thought with me where ever my daily experience takes me. Thank you and blessings for all.❣️

  2. Your image of the damaged field of clover was so helpful as I was able to look back on challenging times in my life when I felt depleted or overwhelmed.. and Love embraced the human need.. lifted me up and I found new strength and purpose..
The Father’s loving support was there in God’s universe of infinite supply..
    Blessed I am..
Thank you for these images and insights..

  3. This is so important to understand, thank you Evan for your loving reminder. I recall what Adam Dickey said in his article: “God’s Law of Adjustment” … “, “How can the law of God, operating mentally, affect my problem, which is physical?” This is easily understood when it is realized that the problem is not physical but mental. First one must know that all is Mind and that there is no such thing as matter, and thus exclude from thought the offending material sense.
The original definition of the word disease is lack of ease,—discomfort, uneasiness, trouble, disquiet, annoyance, injury. “Disease,” our Leader says, “is an image of thought externalized. The mental state is called a material state. Whatever is cherished in mortal mind as the physical condition is imaged forth on the body” (Science and Health, p. 411). This also applies to heat, cold, hunger, poverty, or any form of discord, which are all mental, though mortal mind regards them as material states. It can therefore be seen how the law of God, which is mental, can be applied to a physical problem.”

My husband and I had to see this when we had a field on our newly purchased farm that was badly compacted and huge clods appeared after we ploughed it. It was mid winter and no rain expected for 4 months. We prayed and over night we had gentle rain, enough to dissolve the clods and enable us to level off with a tool-bar the next day. What cannot God do? What a wonderful Kingdom this is that God has lovingly placed us in.

    1. Lovely Day, I refer to the article and the pamphlet “God’s Law of Adjustment often.” It is steeped in God’s good all-power. I love your last line, “What a wonderful kingdom this is that God has lovingly placed us in.” It so is! But we have to see that with our spiritual senses.

  4. Someone found a four leaf clover! It is a great picture. A field of nurishing food which is highly sought out. But the four leaf is rare. It inspired song long ago. It is viewed as a good luck symbol.

This morning Evan has given us a field of truth to healing the fear of pandemic. Thank you for writing the artical in the Sentinel. It’s helping us today. It is a rare and sought after food for thought, lucky and inspiring.
Blessing the whole world with powerful prayers, freeing from fear of the pandemic.

“Green pastures are before me, Which yet I have not seen: Bright skies will soon be o’er me, Where darkest clouds have been My hope I cannot measure, My path is life is free; My Father has my treasure, An He will walk with me.”
Hymn 148 words by Anna L. Waring, third verse only.

    Blessings!

  5. An excellent article.in Sentinel. Look forward to reading it again during the day. Your insights Evan always encouraging especially in Covid times when business and social opportunities are diminished but with the right perspective and spiritual eyes new ones may be seen. Thanks again Evan.

  6. Imagine if nothing EVER went “wrong” ..everything was exactly as we think it should be..would we learn anything? Would we even think we need to? Would we search for Truth if everything was just “hunky dory great”? We seem to need to be forced out of our comfort zone to feel the impetus to discover reality and God and even want to feel close to God. When my brother passed on suddenly, it was the WORST thing in my whole life (and there have been other things that were also the worst thing for me at that time too) but as a result of that terribly upsetting and sad event, I grew spiritually and I turned to my books, to CS, to many inspired teachers and people and searched and searched to understand and now after many many long discussions and hours of thinking and writing later, I have learnt a lot. But, the more I THINK I know, the more I know I don’t! SO all these awful things in life are part of our earthly school because we are forced to learn and that can never be bad. A practitioner I used to know once said: “When things don’t go as I hoped or planned, I ask God, What do I have to learn from this Father?” And that lady was the next best thing to having MBE right here with us. She was wonderful, inspired and inspiring …a great teacher and healer.

    1. Thank you Diane. Your comment reminded me of these Beatitudes from Matthew:

3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

6 Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

  7. Thank you so much Evan for this most wonderful article. It has really met my need today and answered my prayerful desire to see beyond the material picture to what is really going on in Spirit. Not only are we dealing with the pandemic here in Colorado, but huge wildfires that “seem” to be devastating our mountains and destroying our air. As I drive home from work each day, and material sense views huge plumes of smoke it is tempting to be overwhelmed. But I’ve also noticed awesome views of the heavens, wonderful reflections of light and color in the sky and there have been heart-warming stories of people helping people and animals that just prove to me that Love is in the midst. Like the evening news last night reporting a wonderful story of people coming together to rescue 200 horses that were in the path of the fire. And another story showing the evacuation of a whole town and the line of cars leaving while on the other side of the road firefighters and fire trucks racing in to help in every way they can! That’s what I choose to focus on….the good, the light, and trust that divine Love is governing this world EVERY minute in every situation.

  8. Fantastic article. I love the farming example. What every threat, problem, issue, whatever, comes down to is a refusal to accept any power other than God. I have really been practicing a turning from whatever challenge seems to be at hand and yielding completely to God. It works and it’s simple and we can use that approach no matter how big or small the trouble seems. It’s a Science.

  9. It is up to me to see the kingdom of heaven each & every moment. Thank you, EVAN, for this well-written reminder.
    Work, watch, & pray…MBE

  10. Evan, thank you so much for this beautifully written, “pen of an angel” article, that so clearly articulates the message of hope that is so needed right now. I will read and gratefully listen to it many times over. Through your inspired examples of spiritual dominion over material limitations, thought is lifted above the confused, unsettled, and depressing sense of man as controlled by unstable, harmful laws of sin, sickness and death. You show that no matter how vivid the picture in world consciousness of fear, isolation, and deprivation, that this is an obscured and erroneous sense of life which dissipates as we adhere to the Truth of the kingdom of heaven at hand, as Jesus so fully demonstrated in his earthly career. We are also so blessed to have the radiant examples of the astounding healing works of Mary Baker Eddy, who’s entire life was dedicated to the elimination of human suffering.
With the knowledge we have in Christian Science, through prayer we can change the world!!

  11. Am thankful for all your wonderfully inspiring comments here!
Thank you deeply for your utmost inspiring, healing and comforting article in the Sentinel of 19th October. It gives me very much and I surely read it many times more. It is absolute a keeper. The article expresses such a Love, that I feelm with all the wonderful healing examples of Jesus and yourselfe. What a very lovely testimony about your clover field. So loving, how you and your dad watered all the little restplants with gratitude and love. The roots where still in the earth, they had only to be lovingly cared for. Also in us God planted the roots, they have only to be cared for, and God does that, even if we are not quite aware of it for the moment.. What Shirley says: work, watch and pray from MBE. brings us forward in understanding God. Thinking just at the 7 synonyms for GOD, then we see how huge God is, the All in All.
I also understand that this special time leads to what St. John saw in Spirit, the new heaven and the new earth and the new Jerusalem. Jerusalem is the holy city, and every town or village is a Jerusalem, Gods holy city. For our spiritual sense this special time is a time of purification of our consciousness, which leads us to newness of life. I understood that all this is also expressed in Evan`s great article. Thank you Evan!!

  12. Wow, what a fantastic article – so encouraging and instructional! Thank you Evan for being such a clear transparency for Truth to shine through!

  13. “…work out the spiritual which determines the outward & actual.”
MBE (Sc&H. P.254) That partial statement was given me over 50 years a go…it is meaningful, now.
    Thank you all
