Seek the real this Christmas

December 19, 2017 | 13 comments

Christmas is a spiritual event. It’s about the coming of Christ which reveals eternal life with God.

With all the parties, gift-giving, and secular festivities that often surround the Christmas season, it’s helpful to remember that Christmas is not about indulging the senses, but about celebrating Life in Spirit.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “In Christian Science, Christmas stands for the real, the absolute and eternal, — for the things of Spirit, not of matter” Miscellany, p. 260.

Seek the things of Spirit this holiday, and become a better person for it.

  1. Yes, Anne, thats right. Today we follow Jesus to continue his work to represent the Christ – the Love of God on earth. And therewith of course we also follow our dear Mary Baker Eddy.
Yes, wonderful Ted “a feast of Soul”.
Since years I did not invite friends. But this year I invited a church member with her son who need it. I feel it as an act of kindness and “loving our neighbor.” We do not have a feast with turkey or so, but solely cheese-fondue, for my taste most delicious.

Thank you Evan; such a nice picture of the holy night.

  2. …” the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5 : 22-23

These things of the Spirit have found me in sharing with my neighbor this season as well. Am most grateful!

  3. I love the photo of the star shining so bright in the darkness. The light makes things so clear that we can’t help but see and understand the Christ presence and in turn reflect the light as well.

  4. How grateful I am that this year my Christmas festivities will end on Christmas eve with the attending of a Christmas service at my granddaughter’s church with her and her family: husband and 4 great grandchildren. and my daughter. Christmas morn will be spent with my Father/Mother God appreciating the story of the birth of Jesus in this week’s Bible lesson, and contemplating the truths revealed therein.

    A joyous Christmas to all!

  5. I couldn’t resist.
“Business!” cried the Ghost, wringing its hands again. “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business!” -Charles Dickens, novelist (1812-1870) [in A Christmas Carol, published on this date in 1843]
OUR ‘business’ is to help mankind using the traits mentioned by the Ghost, but elevating thought to the spiritual . Thanks for everyones’ inspirations.

  6. I watch the 1951 (?) version of the A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sims each year. I love that speech very much. There is a lot said in this little story. Merry Christmas.

  7. The spirit of Christmas is with us every day: gratitude, love, peace, joy, inspiration. It is a gift for us to share daily with each other and the world.
