Set goals you can reach

July 27, 2023 | 33 comments

Have you ever set a material goal, not reached it, then despaired in disappointment and discouragement? If so, you can avoid a repeat of that experience. Instead of setting material goals that may or may not be reached, set spiritual goals. You can always reach a spiritual goal!

For instance, if you want to live wealthy, be sure to measure wealth in spiritual terms. Real wealth is wisdom, gratitude, love, peace of mind, spiritual mindedness. You can have these riches without limit!

If you want to live healthily, understand health in spiritual terms. Health is spiritual mindedness, spirituality, peace of mind, morality, fearlessness, love, gratitude, an understanding of spiritual truth. A mind filled with these healthy states of thought experiences real health.

If you want a life filled with love, know that love comes from God without limit. There are no limits on how much of God’s love you can live and express. Your success is not dependent upon another person. Success is between you and God.

All the best Life has to offer is spiritual. It’s not found in a material thing or event that has a temporal shelf-life. It’s found in Spirit, through spiritual understanding.

For real success, set spiritual goals. Seek spiritual outcomes. There isn’t anything material standing in the way of reaching a spiritual goal.

  1. Thank you dear Evan! I am reaching my spiritual goals!! my goals were reached all along, thanks for pointing it out.
i love your beautiful postings in SpiritView they are always healing.
    Love Lynda

  2. Thank you, Evan, for another beautiful and instructive SpiritView. It is very fulfilling to express God in all the ways you’ve mentioned and to stand back and observe the fruitage it brings. While not material in nature, God’s love always pours forth every human need.

  3. Thank you very much, dear Evan, for these very helpful
thoughts this morning. Much appreciated. Very strange …
the site had said there were 4 comments, but I do not see any
of them. Kind of like mortal mind. One can not trust the
mortal senses. Trying to hold to the spiritual goals for spiritual
    outcomes!

  4. This is one of the most inspiring Spirtviews I have read, Evan! It has brought me to the ‘Square One’ of purifying and ‘unselfing’ my day-to-day goals, and thinking more about how positively my prayers, thoughts and actions can affect others. I am a visual artist who works in a variety of media and it is tempting to base my happiness on the quality and quantity of my material works at a given time. Your words express a favorite passage of mine from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 265, 5: “Mortals must gravitate Godward, their affections and aims grow spiritual, -they must near the broader interpretations of being, and gain some proper sense of the infinite, – in order that sin and mortality may be put off. This scientific sense of being, forsaking matter for Spirit, by no means suggests man’s absorption into Deity and the loss of his identity, but confers upon man enlarged individuality, a wider sphere of thought and action, a higher and more permanent peace.” These words on Godward gravitation help to bring a very spiritual ‘spin’ on the concept of spiritual goal-setting! I feel ready to ‘roll up my sleeves’ and get started! Thank-you, Evan!

  5. I saw a t-shirt that had the message “the best things in life are not things”. I smiled to myself because as a student of Christian Science I immediately thought of the spiritual qualities that I should strive for. Qualities such as Evan mentioned: wisdom, gratitude, love, peace of mind, fearlessness, etc. These are the spiritual “things” that God so abundantly supplies us. We have only to acknowledge them and available ourselves of them.

    1. Jamie, thank you – I love that t-shirt message. It reminds me to always “resolve
‘things’ into “thoughts, and exchange the objects of sense fo the ideas of Soul”
As you are saying, to turn to the spiritual qualities that are solid and real, and express them at all times. To have spiritual goals, as Evan has explained.

  6. Thank you Evan. Could you please talk more on how our success is not dependant upon another person. I am always trying to please some one and always failing.

    1. Yes, it’s important to understand that everything you need to succeed comes to you directly from God. Wisdom, understanding, insight, ideas, etc., all come direct from divine Mind, and prosper your human activity. Another person cannot stand in the way of you receiving inspired ideas from divine Mind! Please God first, by listening for His direction. You’ll come out on top that way.

  7. Thank you Evan for today’s SpiritView. I really needed to hear this truth and keep my goals attainable as you pointed out. I’m so grateful for you and my SpiritView family’s daily sharing of God’s Truth. Thank you all.

  8. Hmmm…it says 12 comments, but when the site opens, none is here. Is anyone else
    having this issue?

  9. It is mid-afternoon here and it seems strange that no-one yet has posted anything yet,
I think perhaps it hasn’t reached everyone. Anyway,
it is such a wonderful message, that I look forward to wonderful ideas coming as usual.

It all points to understanding that God, Spirit is our life, doesn’t it, and that everything about us is
God-directed and maintained by His spiritual Law of harmony. So we
need to turn to Him for everything.

This hymn inspires me to look to God, especially as the words were written by a man
wo was bedridden for years until he found the answer to his problems in the
    teachings of Christian Science.

We cannot turn away from God / Because, whichever way we face, / Spirit is there. In every place, / Every direction, everywhere, / Spirit is there.

Whether we turn to left or right, / To north or south or east or west, / We meet with Love—and we are blessed. / Upward or down, below, above, / We meet with Love.

Whether we plunge to ocean trench / Or plot our course for farthest space, / Love’s law controls. Whatever race / We enter toward whatever goals, / Love’s law controls.

Whether we build for centuries hence / Or let tomorrow bound our aim, / God sets the pace. Always the same, / With instant and eternal grace, / God sets the pace.
    (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 591:1–4)

  10. Eurela! I just posted my thoghts as there seems to be no response, and when I did,
the others which did not appear on my screen came up. So I will now read them
    gratfull and jpyfully.

  11. I got yhe input from others when I post mine., but now I can’t get anything., and
    istill says “No comments yet”!!!!

  12. Evan this is a message that is always timely. The world tries to define success materially, and if we follow the typical proscribed path we can end up with the unsatisfying realization that there is no true fulfillment to be found on that path.

This sentence really jumped out at me, “Success is between you and God.” Very profound and something to really ponder. Also great that you remind us we have no limitations except the ones we accept from mortal mind,, “You can have these [spiritual] riches without limit.” Thank you.

  13. Dear Evan
THANK YOU for this message — SET SPIRITUAL; GOALS !!!
A person may think we are, I am, setting spiritual goals by just reading the Lesson each week, or going to church, but as good as that is, it misses the point.
To DO and LIVE the ACTION that Jesus did, and laid out for us to do.
Like he said to the lawyer who asked “And who is my neighbour?”
He had all the right answers (by the Commandments book)
    But Jesus told him
DO THIS AND YOU SHALL LIVE!

So, I get it in your SpiritView today! SET SPIRITUAL GOALS!!! do and act upon the program God has prepared for us, and is giving us the strength along with the desire to do good,

THIS is the GOAL for wealth, health, and happiness — the GOOD life is already here
in each of us FROM GOD, GOOD.
Thanks for every one of your SpiritView posts, and your articles in the Christian Science magazines! And the many memoraBle lectures you have shared with people in many places!!

  14. Still no comments are showing up even though now it says 19.
I am hoping somehow it can be fixed. I can’t see if anyone else
is having this issue. Occasionally one comment shows up but
then when I try to open the comments again, it says
    No comments yet. : (

  15. Still I can’t access the comments, until I type something in myself – it still says
“No comments yet”. So I am typing this in to gain access.

  16. thank you dear Evan.
we are all trying our best to follow in Christ Jesus footsteps which can be very hard so I am grateful for any encouragement coming from you and others.
Juergen Kurt Stark wrote in the July Journal a wonderful article:”Impersonalizing the mortal self by following Christ”.

  17. Thank you so much Evan for this today…so fundamental, truth shining through ….
Like some others I was unable to read the comments on SV today until just now. But wow, such a joy to read all the comments one after another. Thank you to everyone .
    Last verse of hymn 139
Come walk with Love along the way / let childlike trust be yours today /uplift your thought, with courage go /give of your hearts rich overflow /and peace shall crown your joy filled day /come, walk with Love along the way ❣️

  18. YAY!!!! I am now able to access these wonderful comments, too!
Thank you so much, whomever fixed the glitch! There is extreme
weather in the area right now, so am so grateful to have been able

place…I missed you, dear SpiritViewers and am So Happy to have
    you back!!!!
