Spiritual priorities bring peace

November 18, 2021 | 30 comments

If you feel stressed out from too much to do, it may be time to readjust your priorities.

When our priorities are spiritual, they bring us peace!

The worldly mind would outline activity in terms of tasks to complete, people to call, jobs to finish, papers to write, bills to pay, proposals to submit, and other demands on our time and person.

The spiritually inspired thought sees the unfoldment of a day much differently. Instead of measuring success in terms of how many tasks are completed, success is how much spirituality was expressed while doing one’s jobs.

When you work unselfishly with love in your heart for the opportunity to express intelligence, wisdom, worth, value, usefulness and care, stress evaporates.

The spiritually inspired worker discovers that it’s not stressful to express love, to be grateful, to be helpful, to know God’s presence and trust that everything works together for good in its own perfect time.

A key to less stress, is to have less worldly priorities and more spiritual priorities.

When working for God, one’s workday is peaceful and blessed.

  1. Hi Evan, thank you once again for your wonderful inspiration. I just love “success is how much spirituality was expressed while doing one’s jobs” – what a great idea!

  2. My teacher said, when he entered the practice,
“Oh, goodie! I get to work for God!”
Later, he humbly revised his thought,
“How good. I get to work WITH God.”
After some deep soul-searching and prayer he came to the only possible truth,
“Oh, great blessings. I get to stand back and watch God work.”
Yes, divine Love alone has done the work, (See SH 260:13) revealing the established truth, the all-power and all-presence of harmony and perfection throughout the universe from all eternity. “For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever.”

    1. Thank you Diane for sharing your Teacher’s realizations -really helpful on bearing witness to God in All (have enjoyed dwelling on it today).

  3. Do everything with love, and love everything you do – and somewhere I also read – and love will do
good things for you – or words to that effect. So no matter how trivial or mundane a task seems to be, if we do it with love, we will keep happy and healthy, and will be glorifying God in the process.

  4. What great thoughts for the day and my gratitude for expressing your joy in the morning. Defining success what a marvel!!

  5. Happy Thanksgiving to all. I so appreciate your blog and all the contributions every day. It’s the first thing I read in the morning. Thankyou all!

  6. Thank you. This message is very helpful to me. I wrote down some passages so that I can think about them again. I also forwarded this message to my daughter, who feels work place and some family member stress.

  7. Thank you so much for today’s blog, Evan! Love these lines particularly:

“Instead of measuring success in terms of how many tasks are completed, success is how much spirituality was expressed while doing one’s jobs.
“When you work unselfishly with love in your heart for the opportunity to express intelligence, wisdom, worth, value, usefulness and care, stress evaporates.”

They give a refreshingly different, and lighter, perspective to our to-do lists!

  8. Prioritize spiritually each day is so necessary. Thank you Evan for a very helpful reminder to keep our spiritual “hat” on while doing everything. As others have said, I do read your blog each morning before I start my day along with the Bible Lesson. It’s nourishment for the day and I enjoy going back to the blog the following day to catch up with other contributions too.

  9. Love this and the comments! About a year and a half ago, I started making a to-be list along with my to-do list. The to-be list is my priority now every day and I revisit it when the to-do list seems overwhelming. God identified Himself to Moses as the ultimate to-be in “I AM that I AM.”

    1. Angela, I love your idea of a to-be list. On it we can add reminders to be aware of the qualities God has already given us — love, gratitude, kindness, helpfulness, joy, being witness to His power and presence, intelligence etc.

Evan, just reading your post made me feel lighter. Thank you.

I work part-time in a large department store. I’ve been realizing that regardless of the job description the company provides — for me my job description is to let Friendliness, Kindness and Helpfulness (God qualities) be expressed through me to all my customers, everything else follows from that. Not surprisingly, customers walk away feeling valued and cared for and I feel joy and satisfaction when things are seen through this lens.

      1. Thanks Rose for your comments here….Friendliness, Kindness and Helpfulness are WONDERFUL qualities to have when you are in retail sales….especially during the holiday season! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

  10. Many thanks for these thoughts this morning, Evan. Having “spiritual priorities”instead of “worldly priorities” lets God unfold our day. Appreciate all the additional comments supporting Evan’s inspiration.

  11. Addressing the topic of spiritual priorities is very helpful this morning. Yesterday, there was a situation in which more communication would have been helpful with the colleagues I work with. I had gone to brunch with my supervisor/boss and when I came back to work, another colleague of mine seemed irritated that I was not around when I was needed. In metaphysically addressing this, I realized my only job is to love my colleague and properly and professionally adjusting my schedule seemed the right course of action. At the end of the day everyone was grateful each person addressed the need and moved forward. Today, I’m going to make sure that my spiritual priorities are clear, starting with loving my colleagues.

  12. Good advice on readjusting priorities. Loved this comment, “When working for God, one’s workday is peaceful and blessed.” Thinking of this as millions and millions of people in the U.S. have been given the vaccine mandate this week, with employees having to choose between taking the vaccine or keeping their job.

  13. Thank you so much for this blog and many others. Although I read it a couple of days after it was posted, it was just what I needed to be reminded of. Also thanks to all of you who share your insights.
