Stay focused

April 3, 2026 | 24 comments

Sometimes people mention to me that they’re having a hard time staying focused on spiritual truth.  Their thought is running all over the place, not finding an anchor with God that brings them peace.  When they study the Bible and Science and Health, searching for inspiration, nothing of significance sinks in and grabs hold.

If this happens, it’s a good time to remember that there is one Mind, the Mind of God, and that this Mind is your Mind.  It’s a Mind filled with messages of Truth and Love that have deep meaning, are readily understood, and always sink in and have a good effect.

Also, know that mortal mind’s distractions are not attractions.  Truth is attractive and worthy of your full attention.

It’s not normal for your thoughts to get pulled in a worldly direction and feel lost in fear and doubt.  Material mindedness is a foreign land for you.  That’s why it feels so uncertain.  Spiritual mindedness is home with God for you, and it feels good to be there.

You can think spiritual truth and understand it.  As a child of God, you love truth, embrace it, readily identify with it, and express it.

You can stay focused on what matters most.  Spiritual mindedness is native to you.

  1. Perfect timing. As a song from Journey said, the wheels go round and round in my mind. To know and understand there is only one Mind stops the spinning and wandering and does bring harmonious focus.

  2. Happy Easter (and Good Friday) everyone! As I wrote that, I wondered why today got the name “good” Friday? There didn’t seem to be anything good about the crucifixion, I thought. But then I searched the internet for an answer to that question and got this as an AI generated answer.
    ————————-
Although the day commemorates a tragic event, it is called “Good” Friday because it signifies the ultimate good that came from Jesus’ sacrifice. Some traditions suggest the term evolved from “God’s Friday,” while in other languages, such as German, it is referred to as “Sorrowful Friday” (Karfreitag). The “good” reflects the spiritual victory over sin and death that Jesus’ crucifixion made possible.
    ————————-
The “spiritual victory” is what we commemorate at Easter but after reading the above answer, I’m going to also be grateful today for the “ultimate sacrifice” Jesus was willing to endure as a means for proving to us all that God is Life and therefore everyone, as God’s manifestation, has eternal life’.

Prior to Jesus appearing after the crucifixion to the disciples, they sure seemed to be having trouble staying “spiritually focused” as Evan’s topic today explorers. The disciples were mired in materiality…focusing on all the tragic events a material-based sense of life was probably causing them to rehearse over and over in their thinking. Mortal mind, the false sense of Mind that we get tricked into believing, loves to try and get us to focus on sin, sickness, and death and rehearse those errors over and over in thought. But we can break that pattern by “focusing” on spiritual truths…and reasoning about spiritual truths until they become understood and no temptation to believe a lie about Truth can trick us into believing it. Or to state it a different way, nothing can break our focus on spiritual truth when we understand truth.

I listened to a Sentinel Radio program from Sept. 1998 recently that I found inspiring and thought it illustrates the ability we all have to break out of a materially focused viewpoint to demonstrate our innate ability to stay focused on spiritual truth. And isn’t focusing on the truth of Truth, the life of Life, and the love of Love (the manifestation of God) our purpose and what we are intended to demonstrate each day? Happy Easter!

    1. Thanks for your comments RobertH. Wondered the same thing about Good Friday when I woke up today, and so interesting on the explanation. Looking forward to listening to the Sentinel Radio program. Happy Easter to you and all!

  3. Thank you for this reminder to stay focused on what is spiritual truth.
Mortal mind’s distractions are not attractions. They pull us away from
Truth and harmony. Spiritual mindedness brings peace in ourselves
    and the world.

  4. The real Christian Scientist is constantly accentuating harmony in word and deed, mentally and orally, perpetually repeating this diapason of heaven: “Good is my God, and my God is good. Love is my God, and my God is Love.”

Beloved students, you have entered the path. Press patiently on; God is good, and good is the reward of all who diligently seek God.
(Miscellaneous Writings 1883–1896, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 206:19–26)

  5. I really enjoyed the SV discussion two days ago about birthdays and the truth of our eternity. The comments and shares were wonderful, but I did not get a chance to comment.
Today is my Happy Eternity Day, my Happy Beingness Day. I noticed there were several others having their special BE day today or recently or coming up soon. I wish us all a FUN and carefree celebration. God wants us to be lighthearted and enjoy the simple gifts and (continuous) Life He gives us.

    1. Happy Eternity Day/Happy Beingness Day to you, Rose and to everyone, on
this journey of forever…to spiritual truth. Our God-given Life is like having a
party where everyone brings a gift to celebrate Life to share with each other.
The value is unimportant because God’s gifts are priceless and the simplest
joys can be obtained and given. Every gift from God is cherished and none
is more important than another. Spiritual mindedness is given freely and
received in such unique and treasured ways. The main focus of this gathering,
like we gather here, is to celebrate our Life in Love. And like the Easter blessing
teaches, Life is precious and special and not limited by what the senses that
are so limited, seem to be telling us.

  6. Also thanks to Evan for today’s message that spiritual mindedness is our natural and normal state. It’s how God made and makes us, to be able to hear and understand Him always. I agree that material mindedness is a foreign land to God’s children and that’s why it can feel so uncomfortable and discordant. The photo above makes me sense the eternity and spaciousness of the one Mind.

Love to all and Happy Passover, Good Friday and Easter. The spiritual energy is very high at this time.

  7. Thank you Evan for this post reminding us that God is our Mind. Not the flaky mortal mind that struggles to stay focused. I guess it tries to get us all at times to get sucked into believing that we can’t listen to and reflect the Divine Mind. A wonderful reminder.
And thank you to all the wonderful supportive comments from everyone on this site. I’m so grateful every day for this community of thinkers.

  8. I wonder sometimes. And I wander sometimes.

One of the wonderings was, in my search for God and such, am I demonstrating that I have not yet achieved, “My Father and I are one.” Intellectual grasp of it ? Yes. But with what mind is that grasp?

I have shown by my thoughts and actions that I have a CONCEPT of God, and that is the rub. The concept is not the thing, only my personal prejudiced musings on what it is.

Until I know God, as in BEING with God, I am not.

When I am that I am, THEN my Father and I are one.

Happy trails all, on the path of resurrection.

    1. Very thoughtful, JohnB – you are right. We have to keep demonstrating what we understanding intellectually,
until we really feel and know that “I and my Father are One”
It is totally yielding to all what we are learning. isn’t it, and feeling the ove it brings to light in us – a resurrection of thought from the
darkness of ‘tomb’ thinking, to the light of spiritual joy and freedom. Happy Easter everyone. love, Maggie

      1. I just want to add this hymn, which says it all. You will probably all be singing this on Easter Sunday.

Let us sing of Easter gladness / That rejoices every day, / Sing of hope and faith uplifted; / Love has rolled the stone away. / Lo, the promise and fulfillment, / Lo, the man whom God hath made, / Seen in glory of an Easter / Crowned with light that cannot fade.

When we touch Truth’s healing garment / And behold Life’s purity, / When we find in Love the refuge / That is man’s security, / When we turn from earth to Spirit, / And from self have won release, / Then we see the risen Saviour; / Then we know his promised peace.

Living meekly as the Master, / Who of God was glorified, / Looking ever to the radiance / Of his wondrous Eastertide; / Freed of fear, of pain, and sorrow, / Giving God the honor due, / Every day will be an Easter / Filled with benedictions new.
        (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 413:1–3)
