The government of divine Love

The government of divine Love is supreme.

~ Mary Baker Eddy, Miscellany, p. 278

Hatred, greed, self-love, self-righteousness, pride, ego, and malice may on occasion rear themselves in the form of anarchy, anger, destructive rioting, chaos, and conflict in society, but they will fall at the feet of omnipotent Love.

Love is power. Hatred is not. The integrity and substance of Love will have the final say.

Let us side with Love and demonstrate God’s government over man.

Let the government of divine Love reign supreme.

  1. “Thou shalt not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Ge.
We will not allow ourselves to be reached by phases of error, this keeps us safe in God!

  2. It’s been quite a few days of searching, finding and casting out error here in our blessed America.
True statesmen have spoken. Things are being changed. New ideas and leaders are being inagurated. The people have spoken.
Evil is neither person, place, thing or idea. It showed in order to be cast out.
“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of The Lord forever.”
Our Capital Building is our political house. Principal dwells there. It was protected by the efforts of principaled thought. A problem seen and disarmed.
Now progress in overcoming a false sense of government.
Incredible good and evil coming to the surface as the muddy river bed is stirred, impurity being washed away.
The new place for rebirth of the Science of Christianity is under control. Citizens of heaven rejoice. His kindom is forever!
Thank you for this opportunity to express gratitude for resolution of human willfulness.
Divine Love alone governs man. All is well.

    1. David~ Your thoughts and words resonate deeply with me. I have written them in my spiritual journal to be read often, Thank you!

      1. Truth was revealed, John. All 50 states agreed that our election was just and fair as did 60+ judges and The Supreme Court. All claims were thrown out because they were false. Truth and Love and all that is good and right would surely have revealed any fraudulent claims by now. That is what Truth does- brings error to the surface to be healed and corrected. Mrs. Eddy tells us, “A lie has only one chance of successful deception, — to be accounted true.” (Un. p. 17:1–2) Man cannot be hypnotized to believe in something that does not exist.

    2. David: your comment…”the people have spoken”… The other half of the millions and millions of people in the U.S. would not agree with that statement. There is a sense of divisiveness and disenfranchisement, instead of one God, one government.

  3. Thank you so much for these posts, Evan. To echo your words above: “Let us side with Love and demonstrate God’s government over man” – doesn’t Mrs Eddy say in her other works apart from S&H “Attempt nothing without God”…. as Jesus did.
I found it interesting that on Sunday morning during “Sunday Sequence” radio program here in NI, the presenters were asking and answering the question “What is true governance?”

  4. May I take a moment to express profound gratitude to you Evan, You have taken the time to direct the thought process of what is going to be an interesting week in the USA.
I am looking at all that is occurring at this time as an opportunity to grow in understanding of Christian Science. I am depending on the seasoned thinkers who share their thoughts here to continue to help in my growth. And I am so so grateful❣️
    Love.Life.Principle..Mind.Soul.Spirit.TRUTH
    GOD is good.

  5. Thank you Evan and all the S.V family.
“Devine Love always has met and always will meet every human need”. M.B.E. Note it says Every need! We are all God’s family, now…..

  6. Amén Evan to your words today. Jesus made it clear we can only serve one master.. love is that supreme Master.
In her Easter address Mrs. Eddy said: “ we must lay aside material consciousness, and then we can perceive Truth, and say with Mary, ‘Rabboni!’-Master!”Mis. 179:28
I’m grateful we can feel this unity of love world wide as we have one Master and that is Divine Love governing all mankind.

    1. I read the article you shared and found it to be what is needed to hold in thought during these times! Thanks fir sharing! I forwarded it to friends and family.

  7. Many thanks to Angie for another great complementary article, beautifully expanding on the SpiritView topic. So appreciate these inspired selections, which broaden and deepen consideration of the topic.

  8. Thank you Angie for this article. So so helpful
For this time in our lives. Thanks again. Love to all.

  9. Thank you for this SpiritView. I love this from Science and Health 340:23 “One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;”……This has been so helpful to me.

    1. Thanks Kathy, love that quote, it is so all encompassing. The rest of it reads that One Infinite God, good….”annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, – whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.” Wow.

Another that is appropriate now is from 2 Corin 10:3-5
” For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

  10. Yes Kathy…a wonderful quote. Thankyou everyone. Love will help us separate the human personalities from Gods individual children❣️

  11. Thank you Evan and All. One of the difficult lessons I’ve had to learn (and I’m still learning!) as I’ve studied Christian Science is to lay aside my own will and instead accept God’s will. In politics and many other life experiences there appear to be two or more sides to various issues. It’s easy to get fixated on taking one side of these issues. But I’ve learned when praying about these situations to set aside my own will as to what is the best decision or outcome and trust wholeheartedly that there is one Mind and that Mind knows one harmonious idea and that God’s ideas do not war/disagree with one another. As I align my thinking in this way it frees me of the worry and frustration of believing that evil is real and that some evil power is operating in our experience. This method of thinking reveals God’s idea in human experience and thus reveals the harmony that can be the only effect of one good God.

“The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind — called devil or evil — is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality.”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 469:13–17 The)

    1. Thanks Brian! Great statement of Truth.

Giving up that sense of self-righteousness – I know what’s best, rather than trusting God knows what’s best – is certainly a challenge! But as you say, aligning oneself with God leads to freedom in the recognition of harmony.

  12. Thank you to Evan and this SV family. I so often find such pure Truth spoken here and I am eternally grateful! Unfortunately there are Christian Scientists, even a practitioner, espousing the view that the riotous actions of last week, are not error but rather are the result of chemicalization and are necessary in order for Truth to ultimately appear and prevail. I called a practitioner for support to help me see through what I was seeing as Wednesday’s events were unfolding on live TV and she expressed that same “opinion” and that God’s will is always unfolding and sometimes it was unpleasant. This felt wrong to me. I didn’t argue and politely but quickly excused myself from the call. I stood porter at the door of my thought and quickly affirmed that God is Love and that any unloving conduct is not an expression of Divine Love. Mrs. Eddy’s teaching that such thinking promotes personality over Principle. The practitioner’s word disturbed my thoughts and I have vigorously worked to put that wrong thinking behind me. Today’s post by Evan and the thoughtful and blessed comments are balm to my thoughts. Thank you and bless you!

    1. Stefanie, thank you for your comment! I hope we all would agree that, through our study of Christian Science, it is clear that our loving Father-Mother God is never the author of error or evil in any form.
“The government of divine Love is supreme. Love rules the universe, and its edict hath gone forth: “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” and “Love thy neighbor as thyself.” Let us have the molecule of faith that removes mountains, — faith armed with the understanding of Love, as in divine Science, where right reigneth.” (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 278:7–12)

“How is a mistake to be rectified? …
      First: God never made evil.
      Second: He knows it not.
Third: We therefore need not fear it.”
(Unity of Good, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 20:1: 12)

    2. Hi Stephanie, I understand you are looking for clarity and to the pure reality of Love governing all. And this, we know, is the starting point of healing prayer.

You are so right to question or reject anything that does not ring true to you, Especially if you detect behind it a personal or politically colored opinion. I find it helpful to check out anything that does not ring true to me by going to our Pastor.

To get the straight scoop on the human experience that Mrs. Eddy calls “chemicalization,” check out Science and Health (540:4. whole paragraph). Here is another statement from SH that is helping me now: “The true theory of the universe and man is not in human history, but in spiritual development.” (SH 547:25-27). Human history is often troubling. Spiritual development is joy-imparting.

I appreciate Evan’s razor focus on this “Spirit View.”

  13. Amen to your shared Truths, and thank you for them, Evan. These truths you expressed are True for all relationships, and thank goodness! ❤

  14. Thank you Evan. Amen
Just a little disturbed by political comments that are truly one sided have NO place on this blog.
Never side with a particular party. Gods government is our ONLY salvation.

  15. David –

Your sense of true statesmanship i.e., Truth is curious. It is difficult to reconcile your mortal perception with the violations of state laws, fearful non-action of state legislators and lack of vote integrity . . . all of which are a false sense of government. True statesmanship has yet to be demonstrated.

    1. All gratitude for rebuttal. A man doesn’t govern. It’s the thought guiding him that does. As the firm support of the president became extreme, so did the necessity to put the incident in perspective.
Christian Scientists do not side with error. But listen for guidence and if they express themselves in anyway, it sould be the upward way. Assurance for the right idea to give confidence on this world wide stage is important. Many are disapointed. Many are elated. But all of it is fleeting and temporal.
We stand as world citizens, our prayers are to help and heal mankind.
The Christ is here for all mankind. Let’s entertain the right idea. Stand in that ONE body and ONE Mind which we pray to govern us eternally. There’s no dissagrement when we are all of the same Mind.
A heart rendering speech given by a long standing Republican and past governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger is viral on the WWW. Should you be so inclined to hear it, it contains the oil much needed to sooth a troubled nation. Peace to all. Lovingkindness, David

  16. I think Stefanie may have misunderstood the Practitioners words. She surely must have been
    working on the following citations:-

In Isaiah we read: “I make peace, and create evil. I the Lord do all these things;” but the prophet referred to divine law as stirring up the belief in evil to its utmost, when bringing it to the surface and reducing it to its common denominator, nothingness. The muddy river-bed must be stirred in order to purify the stream. In moral chemicalization, when the symptoms of evil, illusion, are aggravated, we may think in our ignorance that the Lord hath wrought an evil; but we ought to know that God’s law uncovers so-called sin and its effects, only that Truth may annihilate all sense of evil and all power to sin.(SH 540:5)

It seems to me that it is the acceptance of the material disturbances that is doing the stirring up,
and our part is to just keep the spiritual facts of God’s government of love for His wonderful
    Creation.

    Mrs. Eddy also says:
“Be firm in your understanding that the divine Mind governs, and that in Science man reflects God’s government” .(SH 393:16-18)

I think we need to keep trusting and knowing that God is governing, even though we can’t see it at present, and hold fast to this, and condemn no=one, but just patiently wait to see how God is working it out..

    1. I agree, Maggie. I had the same passage come to me when I read Stephanie’s confusion. I cited the reference but did not provide the text in my comment. I have found that if we are troubled by something we hear or read from an otherwise trusted source, it is best not to force ourselves to accept the message, but to keep our thought open to the possibility we may be mis-interpreting it. Best to wait and look again later when we may see it in a totally new and healing light.

If a friend quotes our Pastor to support personal opinion it is right to beware, but not condemn. It is so wonderful that “in CS mere opinion is valueless”. And, as our Leader notes, decisions (political or otherwise) in human experience at present call for wisdom to choose between the lesser of two evils, and pray for our nations to reach the more spiritual elevation of thought leads to better governance, motivation and legislation. Great humility, compassion and mutual respect is called for. (Concord will supply the source for these mini near quotes of our Leader.)

  17. Thank you, Evan, so much for addressing this urgent issue. What came to me was my gratitude for Mary’s founding of the CS Monitor less than 2 years before her passing. The motto is “to injure no man but to bless all mankind”. She saw there was such a need for un-biased and accurate reporting and had the courage to found it because of divine direction. I have been an avid reader since the age of 20. Sure I’ve had moments where my opinion differed from some of the editorials, but I’ve always come back to its quiet, humble, truth-telling and appreciation-creating articles. After reading the Monitor I have a sense of peace and hope. I’ve lived in 3 other countries, one an arab nation. I can’t tell you what the Monitor meant to me then, and learning of the huge appreciation other foreign leaders, and at that time, including the Eastern blok communist countries, whose leaders called it “that very influential American paper”.
A few years back, I had a good friend who began getting into conspiracy theories and sent me articles and podcasts. However, when listening to people like Alex Jones, I felt upset and uncomfortable. To me, it was a red flag, so I ceased listening. Our wise Leader encouraged us to pray for the media. We can know that our one and only God is the Great Communicator. May all humankind feel the true communication of the healing Christ at this time. With love and peace to you all.

  18. Evan, thank you for addressing this issue which is so very much on the forefront of thought right now. I must admit I got caught up in the mortal picture and the news reports and had a hard time looking at things from the the true spiritual point of view. I appreciate you directing thought higher so we can remember that the Government of God cannot be damaged, diminished, destroyed, harmed or undermined.

  19. The events in the US are disturbing, but I have taken comfort from the talks available on YouTube by Christian Science lecturer Mrs Myrtle Smith, who lived in Northern Ireland during the Troubles, when society there was completely divided. Bombings and killings were common in a Christian country! Mrs Smith’s lecture entitled ‘Peace’ is very helpful. Thank you to Evan, for the reminder that God, good, guards, guides and governs.

  20. Amen, David. This bubbling to the surface is to be seen and moved off human thought. Mrs. Eddy ask another question on page 341 of Miscellaneous Writings,
“When will the whole human race have one God,–an undivided affection that leaves the unreal material basis of things, for the spiritual foundation and superstructure that is rea, right and eternal.”
We just got a step closer to this recognition of unity. Thank you Evan.

  21. Yes thank you dearly, Evan for your today’s SpiritView!
In any case, yes let’s do that. Let us side with LOVE and demonstrate God’s government over man! Thanks for that important and so needed advice, Evan; am longing to! I love the Bible as it is full of God’s omnipotence and omnipresence and full of His promisses of His Love and care for us as His perfect children!♡

  22. I’m being forced to grow in reading through all of this. At first I thought how interesting that so many Christian Scientists could land on polarized opposites of an issue, seeing the same politicians and their ideas of government, for example, in two completely opposing ways. But then I was reminded of two dear friends recounting to me the same incident from two very different views. Both could not have been true. It brought to mind what Mrs. Eddy says in S&H about human opinions: “We are Christian Scientists, only as we quit our reliance upon that which is false and grasp the true. We are not Christian Scientists until we leave all for Christ. Human opinions are not spiritual. They come from the hearing of the ear, from corporeality instead of from Principle, and from the mortal instead of from the immortal.” It’s been said that when MBE had attacks coming at her from various people, she finally realized it wasn’t about the people, it was various forms of animal magnetism coming to the forefront. I, too, have taken sides on politics, but Evan and some of the responders here have brought about this thought: Whose side is God on? That led me to this article: https://journal.christianscience.com/issues/2003/5/121-5/power-not-to-take-sides. I’m grateful for all of this coming to the surface in my thought. A line from a hymn says, “O side with God and win.” That’s the only winning I want to see now.

    1. Thank you so much, Paula, for your comment and the article you share. It means a lot to me!
And thank you, Evan, for your pure and clear statements. This is so helpful! I can never thank you enough!

  23. Thanks Paula for your comment! And I also love the one Statement by Mrs. Eddy you mention here.
However I regrettably cannot read the whole article you refer to in your comment.

Could anyone send that link with the whole article, please? Would be grateful for it.

  24. I am praying for America. The Manual of the Mother Church, Article VIII Section 4 states: It shall be the duty of every member of this Church to pray each day: “Thy Kingdom come: let the reign of divine Truth, Life, and Love be established in me, and rule out of me all sin; and may Thy Word enrich the affections of all mankind, and govern them.”
Powerful opposition for false idols, false narrative and false motives.

  25. Dear All, I am grateful for an insight becoming clearer to me how a truer understanding of God and our relation to God (and so to one another) frees mankind and each precious individual from an unhappy or fearful sense of what will provide and protect their sense of self-worth. I just read “Caste, the origins of our discontent “by Isobel Wilkerson, which deals with how subtle or violent ideas of superiority and inferiority harm society. The understanding of God as pure good, which Evan and CS share is the answer, the haven in the storm. Everyone in our country yearns for more respect, to be and to feel more valued, but may be misled. Let’s pray and rejoice that God, our Maker, alone is the source of infinite worth and self respect. The gospel overflows with this truth and the beautiful, peace-filled meekness it demands. Love to all.
