The light that cuts through the darkness

May 22, 2026 | 25 comments

My wife is a photographer who loves to take pictures at night of the Milky Way and stars and far away places in the galaxy.  To take these pictures, she needs darkness, utter, deep, black darkness, the blackest kind!  To find these dark nights we seek out campgrounds and parks in remote places far from cities and any type of civilization that would cast light into the sky.

Standing in the dark on these nights and gazing out into the sky can be jaw dropping.  The view of trillions of stars sparkling light from distances unfathomable is more than the human mind can comprehend.  There are so many stars and so much to see.  It’s a glimpse into infinity.

What amazes me though, is that the intensity of the light from those stars overwhelms the intensity of the darkness around you.  And the darkness can be intense.  But the stars shine bright!  Their light cuts through that darkness with ease.

I think of times in life when we feel embroiled in conflict or turmoil that cast a veil of darkness over our thinking and make us feel hopeless.  That no matter how dark it appears to be where we stand, we can look up into the sky of divine Mind and find a bright star shining with inspiration coming from God.

As the light always pierces the darkness, the inspirational ideas coming from above can reach us where we are, restore hope, and get us moving again.

So, if ever feeling overwhelmed, don’t be impressed by the darkness.  Keep your eye on the light, on the Light of Truth and Love, and let it guide you to a better place.  \

The light always penetrates the darkness.

“Oh send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling!” (Psalm 43:3, RSV).

  1. It seems to me that this week the blogs have been mostly focussed on Spiritual reality and I am most grateful for them, the contributions made and helpful links provided by other dear SpiritViewers.
I am always in awe of the time and effort Evan so freely gives to provide a glorious SpiritView blog or vlog – often a treatment in itself – every day and cannot thank you enough.
Today my heart is overflowing with gratitude – thank you Evan.
What a wonderful photo accompanies today’s blog.

  2. I LOVE the photo and the inspiration that goes with it. I too have witnessed our beautiful universe in utter darkness ( both ways!! :o) ) and seen the ‘light’.! This SpiritView so very often meets the need of the moment and I too am most sincerely grateful for all these inspiring posts and truly appreciate all the effort that goes into these sharings. They give us such enightenment and are put in such an understandable way for us to make our own. Most appreciatively. = the are my wake-up call every morning.

  3. That is so, so beautiful and help, Evan. The

the first part of your writing indicates that when we feel we are in
deepest darkness, we need to go in the closet of prayer, totally shut
out all the false claims, and look for the spiritual lights we need.
I see you had to seek out a place where the material lights could
not interfere with the beautiful spiritual view you were seeking.
So we need to make a big effort to shut out the material claims
clamouring for our attention. Sometimes that can be difficut, but
we can do it as we persist.

The rest of your analogy then shows us clearly what can be achieved -i.e. the light always pierces the darkness. It is all SO inspiring and
helpful, and so beautifully put. Thank you so much.

Here is a hymn that came to mind:
    Thou whose almighty Word
    Chaos and darkness heard,
    And took their flight;
    Hear us, we humbly pray,
    And where the Gospel-day
    Sheds not its glorious ray,
    Let there be light.

Christ, thou dost come to bring
On thy redeeming wing Healing and sight,
Health to the sick in mind,
    Sight to the inly blind;
    Ah, now to all mankind
    Let there be light.

    Spirit of truth and love,
    Life-giving, holy dove,
    Speed forth thy flight;
    Move on the waters’ face,
    Bearing the lamp of grace,
    And in earth’s darkest place
    Let there be light.
    (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 346:1–3)

  4. God is so beautiful! So soft! So colourful creating such calm! SOUL! Thank you Evan for your inspiration.

  5. From our Bible Lesson this week, “It is Love which… blazons the night with starry gems…” (S&H 247) Such grandeur and limitless Love!
Thank you all for sharing your beautiful Love-inspired thoughts and articles here.

  6. Thank you Evan. Thank you, Kathy.
You say, distances unfathomable. Far away. Yet God is there. I AM is there. The one God, the one infinite, the one I Am is there. The one Person is there. We can look out from the stars because, at one with I AM, we are already there, at one with the one infinite.
I was meditating on this paragraph on page 280 of Science and Health: “Finite belief limits all things. . . and to accomodate its finite sense of the divisibility of Soul and substance it seeks to divide the one Spirit into persons and souls.”
As Kathy must love, to seek and record this evidence, we are not a bunch of persons and souls conflicting with each other. Finite sense is error, not truth. And “disbelief in error destroys error…” (ibid 346) So this understanding of the indivisibility of Soul and substance, which destroys our finite belief, has fathomless power. Look what it does!
“One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfils the Scripture, “Love thy neighbor as thyself;” annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished or destroyed.” Truly a darkness-piercing light!
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 340:23)

  7. Dear Evan, your blog often lifts my spirit with new hope and joy. This morning I was feeling some of the darkness, but your message reminded me in the loveliest way that there is always a glimmer of light to bring hope. And that little light grows brighter and brighter as I let it penetrate and glow. This week’s lesson shows us how to “shine”, and after reading your blog, I feel more shiny!!!

  8. Wow, Both the photo and your commentary are two of the most inspired and inspiring glimpses into Infinity I’ve ever seen or read, Evan. Thanks beyond words❣️❣️❣️

  9. This is Absolutely Beautiful ! So Inspirational, Thankyou Evan, Also all the inspirared comments Love It!

  10. This (and this week’s Bible Lesson) reminds me of a quote attributed to Helen Keller: “Keep your face to the sunshine, and you cannot see a shadow.”

  11. Oh Evan, THANK YOU!. Thank you, Kathy, for this gorgeous photograph. I too love looking at the ‘heavens’– our glorious stars, the aurora borealis ( I lived and traveled many years in the far north); I love to fly and pursued my pilot’s license long long ago–our heavens declare the glory of God and suggest God’s infinitude. ”Oh send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling!” I have been under the weight of so much stress lately–my two beloved sisters’ passing, my house burning, and other troubles coming on– and have struggled for weeks to get up out of the oppressive dark. It almost too much. I am clinging to all I know from our precious Science. Today you have offered this glimmer of hope that the LOVE of LIGHT, God’s first command, is still present. How many times through my life have I witnessed this truth. It is still difficult, and I am not feeling the joy which has always been my ready expression. Thank you, and thanks to my dear SpriitView brothers and sister who are sharing their own wisdom and perceptions, all of which give me courage to keep going. Mary Baker Eddy’s resilient strength and indomitable spirit inspire me. She and Christ Jesus are my touchstones. I am so grateful to know that ”this too shall pass” and ”bright skies will soon be o’er me.”

    1. Dear Annie, I can understand just how Evan’s posting is speaking to you. It is God’s message speaking to you., As Mrs. Eddy tells us, “trials are proofs of God’s care” The spiritual light you need is right now shining on you, because God knows that you are needing Him, and He is sending out that light to comfort and uplift your thoughts.
The light will grow brighter and brighter. as you keep looking up
at “the sky of divine K=Mind”, as Evan puts it. until the darkness is no more. With loving thoughts, Maggie

    2. Oh, Dear Annie, my heart goes out to you with the struggles you have
mentioned. It seems these challenges can be very troubling at times.
But, like in S&H pg.266, “man’s extremity is God’s opportunity”. Often
times these extremities can seem overwhelming in the mortal sense.
I just found out that a friend had passed on. His sister had called to let
me know, but I didn’t get the message right away and without knowing,
I surmised that her elderly mother, my dear friend, had passed. We can
be so deceived by mortal thinking sometimes, which only confirms the
statements of Truth, as shared here with a spiritual view, and that are so
comforting and helpful. As Evan has mentioned with the inspiration from
the heavens, we – on this plane of existence, are not seeing “the whole
picture” of the galaxies that are not limited, but infinite. mortal sense
limits our viewpoint, but spiritual perspectives enlighten our world and
help to chase away the darkness.

  12. Thank you, Evan for shaing this beautiful picture of the Milky Way, and of course , its spiritual interpretation. Looking into the infinity of truth, love shines through in a splended array of living beams.

  13. Thank you for this wonderful and needed, at the moment, display of infinity
with your and Kathy’s love for God’s Universal blessings! The vlogs that you
both take us on, with the delightful places you find these gems of beauty inspire
us with such comfort and loveliness. Of course, the daily expressions of sharing
are also so appreciated and just wanted to say – Thank You, dear Evan.

  14. Thank you for the beautiful images. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like that before gorgeous!

  15. What a healing and much needed message this morning. Hymn 29 comes to thought:

Breaking through the clouds of darkness,
    Black with error, doubt, and fear;
    Lighting up each somber shadow,
    With a radiance, soft and clear;
    Filling every heart with gladness,
    That its holy power feels,
    Comes the Christian Science gospel,
Sin it kills and grief it heals.

I am so deeply thankful for spiritview— the daily blogs, spiritual insights, comments, and linked articles. They feed my soul, my spiritual sense, and encourage me to look up to the light and away from material sense testimony. Bless you all.

  16. Thank you, thank you Evan and to all the Spirit View contributors. Words can’t express how perfectly this message addresses my need today for spiritual help. The photograph is such a perfect part of the written message. I am so grateful for both. The sharing on this precious site is so enlightening and supportive. Today’s message is a loving reminder to look for the light, something I always do as a painter, but sometimes forget in daily life. I feel a special closeness to God when I am painting because the love and joy I feel in creating something gives me a heightened sense of how God must love and enjoy His creation. Painting challenges me in an exhilarating way, but I never feel hopeless and overwhelmed about these challenges
Today’s Spirit View is a big lift…a reminder to look to the Light of God’s leading in every circumstance . Joyfully we can start with a fresh, new canvas everyday!

  17. I have never seen any night sky more glorious than the massive display of galaxies / nebulas that amazed me from the absolutely dark and almost uninhabited outback of Australia. I was spellbound and felt the rush of spirituality just as you describe, Evan!

  18. Thanks Evan – a great reminder and a beautiful photo. I’m guessing the two of you have been to the base of Eagle Cap peak in the Eagle Cap Wilderness. It is an eight mile hike in but I’ve never seen a sky so white with stars as there. My son got up in the middle of the night to relieve himself and yelled “YOU GUYS” – startling us all awake and thinking there was a bear in the campground. Nope, just mind (human) blowing stars!

  19. Thank you Evan for the beautiful photo and your inspiration to keep our eyes on the light. And we are the light! though the darkness gets very compelling.
