Truth Alert; not flu alert

January 14, 2013 | 5 comments

Mortal mind is working overtime to spread a fear of flu throughout the population of the United States this month. It’s no time to stay metaphysically sleepy or dormant on the subject. Rise up with truth and effectively conquer any suggestion that flu is a threat to your health. God is omnipresent goodness, which equates with ever-present health. Stay prayerfully in the mental and spiritual atmosphere of divine Love where all is well, and stay healthy.
Here’s a useful reminder from Mary Baker Eddy on the power of thought and how to negate contagion with spiritual truth:

Contagion

Whatever man sees, feels, or in any way takes cognizance of, must be caught through mind; inasmuch as perception, sensation, and consciousness belong to mind and not to matter. Floating with the popular current of mortal thought without questioning the reliability of its conclusions, we do what others do, believe what others believe, and say what others say. Common consent is contagious, and it makes disease catching.
People believe in infectious and contagious diseases, and that any one is liable to have them under certain predisposing or exciting causes. This mental state prepares one to have any disease whenever there appear the circumstances which he believes produce it. If he believed as sincerely that health is catching when exposed to contact with healthy people, he would catch their state of feeling quite as surely and with better effect than he does the sick man’s.
If only the people would believe that good is more contagious than evil, since God is omnipresence, how much more certain would be the doctor’s success, and the clergyman’s conversion of sinners. And if only the pulpit would encourage faith in God in this direction, and faith in Mind over all other influences governing the receptivity of the body, theology would teach man as David taught: “Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High thy habitation; there shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”
The confidence of mankind in contagious disease would thus become beautifully less; and in the same proportion would faith in the power of God to heal and to save mankind increase, until the whole human race would become healthier, holier, happier, and longer lived. A calm, Christian state of mind is a better preventive of contagion than a drug, or than any other possible sanative method; and the “perfect Love” that “casteth out fear” is a sure defense. (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 228)

  1. This is surely needed and such a positive direction for our thoughts to stay fast on what is Truth. Thank you so much for providing us with daily insight Evan!!

  2. My prayer-thought is that we all live in “the acceptable year of the Lord” where there are no flu seasons or disease seasons of any sort.

  3. Evan, thanks for the Love alert! I’ve always worked with “Love or divine Love is contagious” because it has with it all the power there is. Love is somewhat like a smile, it is very contagious.

  4. As usual, Evan, YOU SAID IT ALL. I was taught in school that man was the highest of all intelligent creatures. As I grew up, it came to me that, that statement wasn’t true. I further came to that conclusion upon studying Christian Science. Mortals are so easily influenced by strangers than by their own family and friends. A medical doctor says, if you eat this food or that, it will lead to health or illness. The mere idea that he/she is a medical doctor automatically puts them into unquestionable knowing. Even though, later it was found out, that he/she was wrong, a wrong diagnosis, a medical mistake. The same attitude to all the professions. I had a dog in my younger years, and so help me, that dog showed more intelligence at times than the most intellectual human. Wisdom and receptivity are the two requirements for intelligent actions regarding influences by persons or the media.

  5. Thank you Evan. I do not remember ever reading this from Misc. Writings before. I love the part about “If only the people would believe that good is more contagious than evil…” I wish the news media would “warn” us about catching good from other people instead of trying to hypnotize us into believing we are at risk of catching bad things.
