What are you tied to today?
A boat tied to a dock stays by the dock. It isn’t free to float away into the sea because of its tie.
Some ties are helpful. Others are not.
For instance, a worker “tied to his job,” might feel limited on what he can do with his family. An investor “tied to the stock market,” might feel elation or depression depending upon the direction of the stock market.
Some of the more harmful ties might include feeling “tied to a disease,” “tied to a bad job,” “tied to age,” “tied to a hurtful partner,” “tied to a heavy body,” and so on. The list might get a little long if one is honest about all the ways they might feel tied up in life.
If so, there is hope!
In our truth with God, we are spiritual beings, blessed with an unlimited Life in Spirit, that is never bound by the flesh or anything material. The more we understand our Life in Spirit, the sooner we break away from the limiting beliefs of material sense.
In sorting out where to put my allegiances, I found this statement by Mary Baker Eddy arresting, “Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh” (Science and Health, p. 31). Let me repeat this. Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh.
She wrote this in the context of seeing oneself as a member of God’s family, rather than a mortal family, but when I read it, I thought bigger than family, to the whole of the human experience. Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. We can do the same!
We do not need to live in bondage to the flesh. If we feel tied to it in some way that is our error. It’s a mistaken belief.
We are not tied to the flesh. We are masters of it.
If we are tied to anything, it’s not the flesh. It’s to Spirit! We are the offspring of Spirit, not of the flesh. And Spirit gives us boundless freedom to be everything wonderful God designed us to be.
Be wise about what you feel tied to. Stick with God and live free.
Grand thoughts
I Love this message. I will keep this message in thought to remind myself to think on this daily and during the day to remember I am tied to God, Mind, Spirit, Soul, etc All Good and not to material sense. Thank you so much for this message today!!!
I’ve been thinking along these same lines lately, Evan. Thank you for sharing these thoughts and that passage from SH and expounding on it. So helpful! .
Maravilloso!!
Thank you, Evan! What a wonderful way to start the week!
Great treatment for feeling stuck and immovable. Spirit gives us boundless freedom and Spirit moves us. In Spirit we live move and have our being. Look to see how Spirit is moving me. God expresses in man the infinite idea forever developing himself broadening and rising higher and higher from a boundless basis. Thanks for support.
I immediately thought of the term “tied to Mothers apron strings”. It apparently means
that someone cannot free himself from the need to always take his problems to his Mother,
and hasn’t found his ability to grasp his own independence – which
for Christian Scientists would be to rely on God, Spirit, and not on
human opinions.
The other one that came to me was:
Hitch your wagon to a star.
“Original intent: Emerson meant that people should align their daily work and highest ideals with universal, noble forces—like justice and truth—so that their efforts are backed by greatness.”
That means to me, following Christ, and giving God all the glory of
every good achievement , springing from our highest ideal..
I meant to say that I am hitching my wagon to a star – aligning my daily work to my highest ideal,
in the heaven of heavens, backed by the greatness of God through Christ, and aiming to
glorify God even in every simple needed task.
So inspiring, thank you!❣️
Thank you, Evan!
Thank you so much Evan. I needed this today. I need to remember that God is governing every event and I am not at the mercy of other people or actions. I’m so grateful for you and Spirit View. God Bless
I love these inspirational thoughts! Thank you! It is often said, in tying
one to a disease = dis ease… This is “my” — — — (fill in the blank) as if
to say, this disease is tied to “me”. Thoughts like that do try to weigh us
down to the mortal, the material, limited belief that we are tied to matter.
Such drags on our thinking, like in advertisements, – if we only looked like
this or had that physical characteristic, we are needy and not perfect, but
need this or that product to make us “better”. But Not being tied to material
sense frees us to see ourselves and others in a spiritual way and that is
certainly a better way.
In the area where I live I’m going to be acknowledging today that we’re not tied to the belief that we’re living in smoke-filled air. “In atmosphere of Love divine we love and move and breathe” as our hymn reminds us. Thank you as always Evan.

Thank you Evan for another inspiring SV. A family member would appear to be severely tied to addictions, spiraling out of control with irresponsible behavior that threatens themselves and others. But it’s very freeing to view this individual, others and ourselves, as having no fleshly ties. What a needed thought shift, and I especially liked: “She wrote this in the context of seeing oneself as a member of God’s family, rather than a mortal family, but when I read it, I thought bigger than family, to the whole of the human experience. Jesus acknowledged no ties of the flesh. We can do the same!”
Excellent way to start the week, Evan, much thanks.
In Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, founder Mary Baker Eddy defines “fire” fundamentally as fear, destruction, lust, and hatred.
Are we tied to a belief that mankind is overwhelmingly exhibiting these errors daily and that they are getting worse with time letting the door open to a belief of global warming and out of control wildfires?
Or as Christian Scientists are we ready to work together for God’s control to eliminate those things unlike Himself? “To untie ourselves from such beliefs?
I pray for the latter
dear Truus
thank you for sharing the ideas of fire and guiding me to counteract the mortal thoughts represented in so much news and social media
