What in the world is going on?

What’s going on in the world?

How you answer the question depends upon the point of view you look out from.

If you reason out from a material point of view, that you live in a mortal world with evil things happening all over the place, that’s what you’re going to see, fear, honor, and experience. If you understand spiritual reality, and realize that the real world is Spirit, where God is in control, enforcing morality and spirituality, that’s what you’re going to see in action.

In the realm of mortality, evil acts are nothing new. They have been part of that scenario ever since mortality claimed to be.

But Jesus Christ came to show us a reality than transcends mortality. He revealed immortality. As he taught, “The kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Matthew 3:2). Where everyone around him saw evil in control causing bad things to happen, Jesus saw God in control causing good things to happen. For instance, in the face of his own crucifixion, he saw Life happening, not death, and his understanding of Life as reality, enabled him to triumph over death and prove it unreal.

We can do the same today! Right where the carnal mind argues evil is in control, we can see past the carnal mind’s vanity, to God in control, and help mankind feel and experience more of God at work on their behalf.

With the Ukraine war, I look for evidence of God at work, inspiring affected people to know their rights to self-government and God-given ability to defend it and demonstrate it. I see evidence of love at work all over the globe uniting massive amounts of humanity in defense of man’s right to self-determination and self-government.

There are many horrors associated with this war, but they are being exposed. Humanity is being informed about them in graphic detail which makes ignoring them impossible to anyone with a conscience. About the destruction of error, Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Error found out is two-thirds destroyed, and the last third pierces itself, for the remainder only stimulates and gives scope to higher demonstration” (Miscellaneous Writings, p. 355).

Christ is at work throughout the human consciousness, informing people of their divine right to live under God’s government, and in peace, without authoritarian domination. Christ will have the final say.

  1. Evan, thank you so much for another wonderful article! I have always loved the quote from Miscellaneous Writings, p. 355. Actually, I love everything that was written by Mrs. Eddy!
    (P.S. I believe the word “honor” in the second line of the third paragraph is meant to be “horror.”)

  2. Cheryl, I saw the word “honor” in that context to mean that if we are reasoning from a material
    standpoint, we are going to be honoring, or bowing down, to that which is unreal, and we will
    experience what we believe to be real. I may be wrong, but that is the way I saw it.

    1. Thanks Maggie; after you explained it that way now, I also do understand it the way you state it!

  3. Thanks once more. The “daily contemplation of things immortal” will end all conflict.
    Ideas keep coming to mind. In the past they have always followed with an application which is effective. I’m very sure that a resolution will come soon. There is positive news coming.

  4. Evan, thank you very much for the wonderful spiritual insight and evaluation of this seemingly dangerous situation in Ukraine. It is not dangerous if we understand it from the christian scientific teaching of Christ Jesus and Mrs. Eddy, as you explained it so clearly, namely “we can see past the carnal mind`s vanity, to God in control …”. And your last passage is so true and powerful “Christ is at work throughout the human consciousness, … and Christ will have the final say.”
    Thank you very very much for your help to see the comforting Truth in this and other seemingly difficult situations, dear Evan, and how they can be healed through Christian Science and our prayers!

  5. ABSOLUTELy right EVAN,i NEED TO BE AWARE OF MY THOUGHT..Thank you very much always for the reminders. AIL WAYS A LESSON FOR ME.

  6. The article is so thought provoking. Evan you have refreshed our minds as to what we are seeing and hearing. The chemicalization of error being brought to the surface to be dealt with in each one of our minds. The nightly news whether correctly stated or not is an implication of what we need to be watchful of. Standing porter at the door of thought is so needed in our world. The world and local events is but the dramatization of social change taking place. We need to plant ourselves in Truth if we are to be in our rightful minds and hearts.
    It takes courage to stand still amid the seeming chaos that is being presented before us [ in our faces].

  7. “This governing of God is, what is actually happening”. Wonderful, it’s the last sentence of Martine’s Link to the articel “What is happening”
    It’s Worte reading and very interesting!
    Thanks dear Martine!♡

  8. Good morning dear friends. Here is an article I have been working with concerning the war and the appearance of evil. Undismayed by Louise Knight Wheatley, Christian Science Sentinel June 16, 1917.
    As Evan pointed out, ‘in the realm of mortality, evil acts are nothing new, They have been part of that scenario ever since mortality claimed to be.” We are the watchmen on duty at this particular time.
    If someone knows how to send the link to this article, it would be very much appreciated.

  9. I like this;
    “With the Ukraine war, I look for evidence of God at work, inspiring affected people to know their rights to self-government and God-given ability to defend it and demonstrate it.”
    And this;
    “Christ is at work throughout the human consciousness, informing people of their divine right to live under God’s government, and in peace, without authoritarian domination. Christ will have the final say.”
    I like seeing people become empowered. Challenges in life often do that and people are left with a newfound freedom they had not known before. That is beautiful. Thanks Evan.

  10. https://sentinel.christianscience.com/issues/1917/6/19-42/undismayed

    “One infinite God, good, unifies men and nations; constitutes the brotherhood of man; ends wars; fulfills the Scripture, ‘Love thy neighbor as thyself;’ annihilates pagan and Christian idolatry, — whatever is wrong in social, civil, criminal, political, and religious codes; equalizes the sexes; annuls the curse on man, and leaves nothing that can sin, suffer, be punished, or destroyed.” Science and Health 340:23

  11. It is not the easy times that define me, but rather how I respond to the challenges that face me. I know that I cannot carry my baggage of error into the Heaven of Truth.
