What you most need

October 12, 2016 | 10 comments

Do you have a list of things that you need today?

Perhaps that list includes errands to run, people to call, projects to complete, work orders to fulfill. Or maybe it has bigger picture items to pursue like earning more money, another place to live, finding another job or better health. Whatever is on your list, be sure that the pursuit of spiritual mindedness is the number one activity printed in bold-face type at the top!

More than anything you could ever possibly have from this world, the possession of spiritual mindedness is more important than them all.

It’s too easy for the human mind to believe it needs something material before it can be happy. But material things and conditions come and go. They make us happy one moment, then drop us into despair the next. There isn’t anything of mortality you can depend upon over the long run to bring permanent joy and reliable health.

But you can depend upon the graces of Spirit to sustain, provide and empower you forever.

Spirit is the source of all enduring good, permanent peace, reliable health and progressive opportunity. When you are tuned into Spirit, you are informed by the all-knowing Mind that leads you aright and causes you to make intelligent decisions and wise choices. It keeps your thought wide open to all the good God is sending your way.

When you are listening to God first, then you are mentally ready to hear what direction to take for the best outcome. You gain a peaceful state of mind that engages with other people in loving ways that promotes understanding and allows for mutual agreements. You find and retain better health.

As Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, and good deeds” Science and Health, p. 4. Seek what you most need today, and the rest will follow.

  1. Thanks and so very well said Evan, if we go about our daily life with a spiritual bent of mind and give God (Spirit), a priority over our material pursuits, we are very well equipped to face the day joyfully and accomplish much good effortlessly.
After all God knows our every need even before we know. If we start our day, by making a list of qualities we wish to express, viz. love, forgiveness, compassion, kindness, calmness, serenity and at the end of the day tick mark the qualities expressed, then we will be blessed with enduring good, permanent peace, reliable health and progressive opportunity. Most importantly we will feel blissful and satisfied. Whatever is required in material terms, will automatically follow. Its so worthwhile to ‘fervently desire to be good and spiritual minded’ as our topmost priority in our “To Do” list.

    1. Nergish…I always enjoy reading your reply to Evans wonderful thoughts.
What a beautiful community we have here in this little corner of cyberspace,,,,I feel like I know each and every one of you, and this is cause for celebration for the nourishment derived here from people of like mind is so refreshing and sustaining….We are so blessed and by our thoughts and good works and this blessing is extended to the whole world…..

  2. Thank you for this perfect way to start the day, Evan. Thank you, too, Nergish, for your added gems of thought. It is a great reminder for us to appreciate all that we have Right Now. Gratitude is riches.

  3. boy I needed that. Today we are closed for the Jewish holiday . I did get up and do my spiritual work. but the list of things to do, being off during the week ,was immense. time to trim the list.

  4. again Thank You Evan! was just checking my own list, & now I’ve added spiritual mindedness to the top……… feel better already! it’s always there, not something to check off, but we need to remember to remember it…………good grief!

  5. Love Evan’s article and all the comments. This came to thought immediately, “Acknowledge the Lord in all thy ways and He shall direct thy path.” That is putting “first things first.”
Acknowledge all of God’s power, all the grace he gives us—-then these things “are added unto us.”
Gratitude for this reminder is with me!!!

  6. Thank you Evan for this reminder and thank you for your comments Nergish. Maximo, I agree this truly is a very special place in cyberspace. Grateful for all comments.

First thing in the morning I have always acknowledged (in my own words) that I must trust the Lord with all my heart and not lean not on my own understanding; in all my ways I must acknowledge Him and He will direct my path. And, Thy will be done today Father, not mine. After a quick breakfast it is time for studying our Bible Lesson, listening to The Daily Lift and reading the Monitor’s Daily News Briefing.

  7. Yes, we all seem to enjoy similar days.
It is a wonderful way to wake up with God and to acknowledge Him throughout the day. If everyone would start their day like this our world would be more safe and loving.

  8. I love this statement: “What we most need is the prayer of fervent desire for growth in grace, expressed in patience, meekness, love, [gratitude] and good deeds” I always add gratitude
And I am so grateful for these Daily Lifts to Evan and everyone who takes the time to comment. Yesterday I had an appointment for a recall on my vehicle and had to go a dealer 100 miles from me. So I left Tuesday and returned Thursday (today). I am so deeply grateful for a very safe and harmonious drive both ways, the successful repairs to my vehicle, and being able to greet my great grandson yesterday on his 16th birthday. “ALL things work together for good to them that love God” and I do love God with all my heart, soul, mind and strength and thank him daily for all of his bountiful blessings. HOW GREAT GOD IS!
