When concerned about government

What can you do when concerned about government in your country or abroad?

I share ideas that heal in an article published March 16, 2023, by the online Christian Science Sentinel, titled
“Living under God’s government.”

      1. Thank you J for this link. What an instructive story of the two practitioners. The statement that they had been praying to support the President and leaders for many years made me think 1) they were ready for the assignment and 2) I need to get on with mine and be less sporadic about it.

  1. Thank you for such an excellent article, Evan. It is refreshing to see more
and more ‘officials’ turning to a power that is higher than they, the power
of prayer, which in turn, restores faith in government. Truth matters and
    there is only One Truth.
I love where you wrote, “We can live God’s government of Life, Truth
and Love”. … and “Jesus’ sermon teaches the qualities that conquer pride,
ego, selfishness and hate”. That includes every evil that would Try to keep
us from seeing the Truth that is our real Principle. Because of all four of
those mentioned, are reasons why we Seem to be in the difficulties we are
in and I might add, greed and power.
We are all children of God ~ all equal in Mind’s harmony and peace.

  2. Thank you so much for your timely articule which does weight on many minds in these days of seeming disruptions. Evil in what ever form is still evil and is destroyed by the understanding of what evil is and how it is no thing. Looking at a mirage is a mirage it takes understanding to know that it is no thing. Applying what you know of God’s kingdom removes the offensiveness of any seeming display of illusion. Remember Love begins with us before we can pass it on. The same respect and understanding that we possess can be applied to all in our gaze.

  3. Thank you Evan. What a helpful article. One really needs to understand the way Jesus handled government and do the same. You have given us a good number of directives which makes it clearer.

We are undergoing an election process which is marred,, full of thuggery and lawlessness. Thank you for making it possible for me to see the nothingness of these struggles and hold unto the somethingness of good.

  4. This article is very timely. When I see people in power doing the wrong thing and being criticised it’s a tempting reaction to jump on the bandwagon. But I have learned that when I am tempted to join in the condemning I put on the brakes and pray.
Years ago I had a manager that always did the opposite of what I asked her to do. If I told her I needed something, necessary to do my work she withheld it etc. At first I was frustrated and indignant and complained about the unfairness. But when I stopped and acknowledged that God was in control of the whole situation, and had all power over my life and hers etc. the things I needed just showed up so fast! You would think I would have rejoiced and continued along that line, but the allure of criticism and complaining and the phony comradarie and sympathy it elicited was a constant temptation for awhile. We can help each other by totally getting rid of these “feelings” ourselves and then we will be better equipped to see that others cannot be victimized by them either. Somewhere MBE basically says whatever is bothering you about someone else’s sin, know that it is in you. This was hard for me to understand at first, but now I know she meant “you believe in it”.

    1. Your explanation about uncovering what’s tempting us to stay on a wrong path was helpful in so many ways. I loved that uncovering the temptation to continue on the wrong path brought out the Truth, if it’s wrong from someone else, it’s wrong for you too, to stay on the ‘wrong’ path. Exposing ourselves to love, for other as well as Love for the Truth, reveals where we can improve, stop believing in the wrong, and letting go of ‘sin’. Bless you for explaining clearly how to improve our understanding of what Truth is for ourselves as well as for others. Uttering the Truth is what it takes. I am grateful.

    2. Thank you Kay. I can very much relate to what you said about the temptation and “allure of criticism and complaining” and the feeling of camaraderie and belonging that this temptation seems to offer. At my place of work this kind of complaining about certain workplace conditions and actions of management goes on fairly often and I have to admit that I too engage in it. Sometimes I even initiate it. Today’s message and article (thank you Evan) made clearer to me how unproductive this behavior is and how I need to be more silent on these topics and pray to see the higher government of God manifesting — on the job, in the national and world arenas and in every situation.

  5. This is such a wonderful article – so badly needed. I loved these lines near the end: “Every time we conquer sin through an understanding of God’s allness and goodness, we are helping our community do the same. We help everyone experience more of God’s government and less of evil’s claim to power.”
It’s so important and good to practice Christian Science!
    Thank you!

  6. Dear Evan, thank you deeply for that wonderful and enlightening article about who is really in control, who is the real and only powerful government. Principle is the first of the 7 synonyms. I also understand Principal as rightous lawfulness. God being all in all is the only lawgiver; and His laws are powerful and the only laws operating in man and God’s harmonious Universe.
There are passages in SH in this week’s lesson sermon, I love very much and which match somehow with your article, Evan. That is on page 207: “There is but o n e primal cause. Therefore there can be no effect from any other cause, and there can be no reality in aught which does not procede from this great and only cause.”
And the other relevant passage is from the same page “The spiritual reality is the scientific fact in all things. The spiritual fact, repeated in the action of man and the whole universe, is harmonious and is the ideal of Truth.”
So when you look at both passages, one can be aware that there can be no power and goverment but alone God, all Good!
Wow Evan, your article gives very very much. And I am sure all commenters here feel likewise.
Thanks Evan for sharing with us so lovingly the absolute Christian Scientific Truth!♡

  7. Great article Evan, thank you. While I have been correcting my thought to know the only real government – Spirit, God, I have had to be more diligent about guarding my thought against the thinking that “this person needs to go, be removed from office, be put in jail, etc”. Your comment that removal of a seemingly evil person just opens a spot for another like minded person to fill it. Good point and one that helps us stay focused on God and God’s action, control.

  8. Thank you, Evan, for this wonderful article! It is so helpful and needed today! I’ve been concerned and fearful at times about the conflicts and division in our country and in the world,, but your article is enlightening. It reminds us to correct our thinking and acknowledge that God’s government is good and is in control!
