A Rule for Motives and Acts in our Manual is another great guide on how to pray, think and act regarding what happens in human government and in all ways. Rebuking sin, Mrs. Eddy says, is one of the ways we reflect the sweet amenities of Love. I like to think about how a parent corrects a child to keep them safe as an example. We cannot go easy on or accept error- cruelty and injustice as normal, no matter where it seems to show up. We must sometimes “go down into the secret” as Mrs. Eddy did. Not always fun but we have all the power of Divine Love within us to withstand and defeat evil.
“Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously.”

The Manual, is the “Church Manual,” which is a governing document for The First Church of Christ, Scientist and its branches. You can find a copy in any Christian Science Reading Room.
Thank you Evan – as a Canadian, I find this particularly timely in view of U.S./Canada relations currently. There is only ONE who governs…
How Peace Came to the World” includes the essays chosen by the Christian Science Monitor staff to share, taken from MANY essays sent in when the Monitor asked readers to answer the question decades ago. My favorite was the one saying it came (comes) about when people of different nations (AND beliefs) get to know each other and refuse to let wars happen or continue (as opposed to Governments deciding this.) I grew up camping in B.C EVERY year and lived there half a year when my parents built a home next to our camping spot. I continued to visit there every summer for decades, as Mom & Dad lived in that home for half a year, until about a decade ago when they both passed away. I SO LOVE my Canadian friends & experiences and always feel at peace whenever I think of WONDERFUL Canada. Bless you Jennifer! I’m grateful we REALLY do both cherish the ONE who is even now governing our 2 countries!!!

Very disappointed in the CS Monitor.
That article had no depth or insight as to what is really going on in the Middle East, coupled with non-facts as to what was stated. To me it was just another example of how mortal mind creeps in and tries to make us believe in mortal symptoms and not believe in the true idea of man and Divine Mind.
The Monitor should do better.
It found that article extremely good and strong. Evan who alerted us
to this article,, and the Editors of the Monitor are full of integrity, and the
writer of the article was found to be so also in order to have the article
published I, myself, found lots of depth and spiritual insight in the article.

To my understanding, it is not actually about what is going on in the Middle East,
but what is going on in our individual understanding and consciousness.
Are we in accord with the divine Mind and listening to Him.? If so, then
we can let divine Mind show us that He is governing us, and all
in authority. God’s kingdom and everything in it was made by
God, is the expression of God, and is governed by God. There is
no material creation, so we need to turn away from what the material
senses are trying to impose on us, and align our thoughts with what
God knows about His children – which includes all that are
imagining that they have power to govern in such brutal and un-Godlike ways.
As Christ Jesus said that he had no power of his own, neither has any mortal
man any power to do good or evil of himself.
God’s creation is spiritual, not material, and it is the only real creation,,
so we have to do our own best to follow the teachings of Christ and
demonstrate our love for God and man, which includes those Jesus
called our enemies, and let God govern us all with His wonderful
Law of all-embracing Love.
This article and thoughts shared are much appreciated. I like the fact that it
was unbiased and non-political in it’s message, but reflecting on the
government of God, which is forever. Law and order express Principle –
one of the synonyms for God. With this law and order also comes the
other synonyms Mrs. Eddy gives … Truth, Spirit, Life, Mind, Soul and Love.
Thank you Evan for such an uplifting article in how we can pray for government – our own and others around the world. And thank you Maggie and Carol for your insights and defense of the CS monitor. This article had no mention of the Middle East or any particular government but was rather lifting the thought of government to God as ever operating over all. I am always grateful for the CS perspective articles found in the Monitor. I am also grateful for the unbiased reporting and integrity of the Monitor.
