Banish impressions of sickness

January 3, 2024 | 22 comments

Let us banish sickness as an outlaw, and abide by the rule of perpetual harmony, — God’s law.

~ Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 381

Would you allow a criminal into your home to roam from room to room and do as he will? I doubt it. A criminal has evil intent and can’t be trusted.

The same rule applies to what you allow into your thinking.

Images of sickness are a type of criminal belief. They rob health and create sensations of suffering.

To stay healthy, it’s wise to prevent images of sickness from hanging out in thought. As Eddy instructs, treat sickness as an outlaw. Kick impressions of illness out of consciousness! Have nothing to do with them.

Banish sickness. It’s not your friend.

Health and spiritual truth coming from God is your friend. Welcome them into your mental home and keep them in close company. You’ll be much safer.

  1. First step every morning – meet and greet your Father/Mother Love ( feel embraced ). Second clean the house ( make sure there are no lingering negative thoughts)..
Third guard the door of thought so only true and good ideas are welcomed in.. Forth go outside and bless someone in need ( heal the sick – comfort someone ).
Last, don’t forget where you live..IN THE HOUSE THAT GOD BUILT.

    1. I love these thoughts John, thank you so much for sharing them. They are really helpful and a perfect way start to each and every day!

  2. Thank you John, wonderful – first meet and greet your Father-Mother Love who embraces you tightly. And, I smile, that`s a perfect housekeeping in the house, the consciousness of Love where we stay forever!

Am very thankful and love them very much; your awakening, healing spiritual views, dear Evan!
A lot to do in God`s household! Will go it on!

  3. Thank you Evan. Thank you, John, for the four steps you have outlined. Thank you Uta for bringing us into the consciousness of love, stating clearly that it is our house.. This is apt for the start of the year.

  4. So Beautiful this message, comments and artwork are this morning! Day by day
if we do all of these things, like Evan and John mentioned, we indeed will be in
a wonderful place.. embraced by Love’s spiritual truths.
I know it has been shared here many times, but the sweet graphic and message
today seems appropriate to share again. Hymn #3…

“A grateful heart a garden is, Where there is always room
For every lovely, God-like grace To come to perfect bloom.
A grateful heart a fortress is, A stanch and rugged tower,
Where God’s omnipotence, revealed, Girds man with mighty power.
A grateful heart a temple is, A shrine so pure and white,
Where angels of His presence keep Calm watch by day or night.
Grant then, dear Father – Mother, God, Whatever else befall,
This largess of a grateful heart That loves and blesses all”.

Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature. To keep our thoughts blooming
with loveliness… that is the grateful heart that loves and blesses all.

      1. Thank you, dear Uta, you know me & flowers! .. LOL… and quotes. Here
        is one I may have shared before, but also seems fitting for today’s topic;

        “Your mind is a garden
        Your thoughts are the seeds
        You can grow flowers
Or you can grow weeds”. – Author unknown

  5. Good morning, dearly, beloved brothers, and sisters!
What a great blessing, is given to us ~ Christian Science, shared here, beginning with our wonderful Evan, accompanying the delightful photographs & artwork.
I really appreciated Bicknell Young’s article “Day” recently, which allies perfectly with today’s conversation. It goes along with the story I’ve heard – and I’m sure you have too–upon awakening each morning Mrs. Eddy would declare for herself “Today my mind is God’s.”
I really like John Qualtrough’s daily list!
I’m putting it in my daily book to follow and practice.
I seem to do better when I write things down in an orderly way
Love to each and everyone here, knowing that Omnipotent Love embraces everyone, everywhere.

    1. Thank you, J, for another great article you have led us to. I always explore the issue from which your selections come, reading most of the articles and learning more ways to put this religion in practice (not just “profession”). So many articles (and poems!) in this Sentinel from 1985 are clear, helpful and inspiring.
You do us all a service by expanding our insights into the day’s topic. Thank you so much for your steadfast contribution.

      1. Thank you for your very kind comment William E. And a wonderful idea to explore the issue for more inspiring insight. 🙂

  6. Love those 4 ideas John – thank you so much. Also love the last 2 lines of hymn 465 which I often repeat to myself:
“I’m living in the house of God,
    The consciousness of Love”.

  7. Thank you Evan for this helpful nudge to stay alert to what impressions we allow into consciousness. In my work as a caregiver, I often find it necessary to “stand porter” in thought to suggestions of disease, pain, and medical theories. In her writings, Mary Baker Eddy clearly and firmly admonishes us to dispute and reject the prevailing false beliefs about body. In Science and Health on page 208 she writes “You embrace your body in your thought, and you should delineate upon it thoughts of health, not of sickness. You should banish all thoughts of disease and sin and of other beliefs included in matter.” And from page 391,-“Banish the belief that you can possibly entertain a single intruding pain which cannot be ruled out by the might of Mind, and in this way you can prevent the development of pain in the body.” Some of Webster’s definitions of banish are expel, eject, extricate, cast out, and ban. Our leader makes it plain that the law of God supports this mental rejection, and that this effort is effective in healing.
My gratitude for this inspired forum, and my love for it’s contributors, is boundless!

  8. “The hosts of Æsculapius are flooding the world with diseases, because they are ignorant that the human mind and body are myths.”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 150:31–1)
So we need to stand on the high ground not on myths! When the myths are disbelieved — vanish from consciousness, we see though the Mind of Christ, Truth, our complete health.

  9. “May flowers always line your path [and thoughts]
and sunshine light your day” (an Irish blessing) … and thoughts of peace…

became very visible today, on the way home, looking at the vast mountain scenery and
open spaces that I used to take pictures of and share with a dear friend who shared her
respective beauty of nature from her location. The gray sky was a bit dreary but with
dramatic clouds, but way off in the distance, became very light and the sun was like I
had never seen it before. Our dear Mrs. Eddy describes the Sun in the glossary of
Science and Health to be: “The symbol of Soul governing man – of Truth, Life and Love”.
In this heavenly moment, the sun was shining through the clouds in a perfect, glowing
circle/orb, where it appeared like the full moon on a very dark night. Usually, of course,
we can not actually look directly at the sun, because of it’s brilliance, but for these brief
moments, the Truth, Life and Love of it’s light shone in a way that was indescribably
beautiful and so peaceful and awesome to behold … and was indeed, “spiritual Truth
coming from God”, as Evan writes above.
I love experiences like this, because just when needed the most, they appear, like
angels (God’s thoughts passing to man; spiritual intuitions, pure and perfect; the
inspiration of goodness, purity and immortality, counteracting all evil, sensuality and
mortality)” – (Mrs. Eddy’s definition of Angels in the Glossary)

    1. Thank you Carol, I needed just this beautiful spiritual vision you describe so wonderfully for taking these angel thoughts and vision with me to bed, now.
The days here are very gray and rainy presently, hardly any sunbeam. But we know, above the clouds of error there is the sun of spiritual absolute Truth, very comforting.

  10. Thanks to all for your contributions and to J for another inspiring article. I attended a Testimony Meeting today where the subject was
Time. It made me recall a lecture by David Hole, “Time is not a Factor” in which he states that “if it’s necessary, it’s possible.” I have
used this on many occasions successfully.
    Happy New Year to all!

  11. Today I saw a picture of an awful-looking disease as a poster in the chemist and the announcement that 1 in every 3 people would get this in their life! I immediately mentally refuted this knowing that NO ONE has EVER had this. I started also by saying to myself (as the picture actually WAS created like this) “THAT IS PHOTOSHOP at its worst!” Then the thought about AI came to mind and I realised that there was also an example of AI..artificial intelligence. The medical profession thought it was the intelligent thing to do to warn us all of this impending problem so we can be ready for it…this is their way of looking after their and our health. I know someone who continually studied cancer online for years (because he thought if he was well aware of all the symptoms then this would help him to deal with it early WHEN the symptoms appeared…he saw this as being pro-active about his health!) Naturally, he manifested cancer in several forms later. But this too is ARTIFICIAL intelligence! To feed images of disease into people’s minds. For me, the idea of this being AI is a helpful analogy and way to identify these sorts of mental impositions as Artificial..counterfeit as MBE says..and as unreal….and certainly seemingly produced by the human “mind” not the divine Mind. Hope I’m not totally off track here but this is just what occurred to me today.
