Are you detecting disease or health?

October 18, 2013 | 14 comments

There is a massive public media campaign going on that admonishes people to detect cancer in its early stages. Well-meaning, from a medical point of view, its thrust though, can be very harmful to an unwitting public in the long run.

People experience what they hold in consciousness and fear to be true. The more the public consciousness is filled with fear of cancer, people expect it to happen, and they look for it in their bodies, and then unfortunately, find it all too often.

The aggressive promotion of disease and fear of it needs to be countered and reversed by alert metaphysicians. It is wise to keep out of our thinking any disease we do not wish to experience.

I have found it helpful to reverse the push to “detect cancer in its earliest stages,” with a campaign of my own, to “detect health all the time!”

Christian Science teaches that we are not helpless in the face of disease. We are not helpless in the face of cancer. It is not a god to us that we must fear and bow down to. It cannot take us over. This is a demonstrable truth.

But we need to stay alert to spiritual truth to make this demonstration. We can’t allow our thinking to go along with the general drift of public thought that props up cancer, teaches one to fear it and actively look for it.

Look for health! Agree with health! Expect to stay healthy and understand the spiritual reason why. A consciousness of truth keeps you in a very safe place where health is the norm, and disease is excluded.

“Disquisitions on disease have a mental effect similar to that produced on children by telling ghost-stories in the dark. … As frightened children look everywhere for the imaginary ghost, so sick humanity sees danger in every direction, and looks for relief in all ways except the right one. Darkness induces fear. The adult, in bondage to his beliefs, no more comprehends his real being than does the child; and the adult must be taken out of his darkness, before he can get rid of the illusive sufferings which throng the gloaming. The way in divine Science is the only way out of this condition” Science and Health, p. 371.

  1. Dear Evan,

Wham! You knocked that pitch over the center field bleachers! Thinking in terms of going on the offensive instead of just “battling against” disease sets the odds in favor of winning right off the bat. Seeing health and recognizing its normalcy is the magic bullet, (to scramble my metaphors). Thanks for addressing this subject. Many will find it life saving.

  2. Great clear message and timely. I’ve been trying to block out the “assault” well meaning as it is. Your last line is stellar: “a consciousness of truth keeps you in a safe place where health is the norm and disease is excluded.” Think about that! Health is the normal and natural state of man. Amen!

  3. evan, having lost my wife of 41 years after a four year material battle to cancer,I could’nt agree more with you evan. so much love was exspressed by all the doctor’s and nurses though and that cant be dismissed.and I’m sure you would be the first to acknowledge that fact.their love is just misdirected.if only the world acknowledged this wonderful Truth…. being emersed in all that materia medica was over whelming at times.not a christian scientist,my wife could only cling to what she had been raised to depend on and I respected her wishe’s,looking back now I wished I had read more c.s. to her and if I had to do it again I would, but I was told by a practitioner when my wife was first diagnost that he could not work for her while depending on materia medica.he indicated it could do more harm than good,so I was torn.still I instinctively just tried to know that divine Love would not abandon his child.that understanding sustained me through this mortal storm.and after she passed in our home with myself and her two sons by her side the father/mother love has not left my thought.such a comfort to have mrs. eddys teachings and her promise that death has no reality .that my wife could never be separated for an instant from divine love. and that she is being cared for this minute, moving on and learning more Truth with each challenge
I have since met a lovely christian science lady and we both feel blessed meeting each other…..now thats Love demonstrated !

    1. Hi Jon,

Thanks for sharing your story. Yes, CS is a blessing. And God is taking excellent care of your wife. Divine Love wipes that cancer away and reveals her clean, perfect healthy self!

  4. Thanks Evan – I love Eddy’s clear statement about this very thing from Science and Health:
“Since God, divine Mind, governs all, not partially but supremely, predicting disease does not dignify therapeutics. Whatever guides thought spiritually benefits mind and body. We need to understand the affirmations of divine Science, dismiss superstition, and demonstrate truth according to Christ.”

  5. I love that you are reminding us of what MBE knew so long ago. Constant vigilance
is more necessary than ever as we now have not only newspapers, but television and internet to contend with. Thanks.
“Looking over the newspapers of the day, one naturally
reflects that it is dangerous to live, so loaded with disease
    seems the very air.”Misc. 7

  6. Dear Evan,

Another gem of thought from you! “Detect health at all times!” A good reinforcement of Mrs. Eddy’s statement in Science & Health P. 392-“Stand porter at the door of thought. Admitting only such conclusions as you wish realized in bodily results, you will control yourself harmoniously.”
Many thanks for your inspirational gifts which help us on our journey from sense to Soul.

  7. Hey Evan,

This is just the perfect message at the perfect time. I’ve been noticing how much all of the well-intentioned, but misguided marketing of disease has been trying to subtly sneak some fear into my thought. Instead of all of these pink products trying to make me aware of cancer, I’m going to be reminded of the constant presence of health and of God’s protection. It’s God awareness day, wholeness and healthiness awareness day, today and everyday. I’m reclaiming the innocence of the color pink. No more fear of disease.

    Thanks Evan!

  8. Wow! I’d like to chime in w age beliefs! Quite aggressive as well. Makes me ever more grateful for Christ Jesus and Mrs Eddy. And for u Evan, and your selfless sharing – thank you so much,
    Most sincerely- Patty

  9. Sorry for the late comment. My mom passed away with cancer so October has been a month I could do without, way too much pink and talk about cancer. This year my very best friend called me with the news that she has cancer. She has had surgery and now has treatment ahead. My sweet son wanted to lend support for her and has made pink and purple bracelets for all of us to wear for “Team Roxy.” I so much wanted to show my support outwardly but was conflicted until I realized the pink in the bracelet stood for prayer and the purple stands for power. I love my bracelet, it reminds me of the love my son has for my friend and I also love being reminded of the power of prayer and to take time out of my daily schedule to pray for my friend and all women.

Thank you so much for your blog. Do you realize just how much it means to me?
