Don’t be bullied by disease

July 8, 2020 | 42 comments

If suggestions of disease ever come your way and want to bully your thought into submission, don’t submit!

The apostle Paul was adamant when he decreed, “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7). This rule applies to suggestions of disease also; “Resist disease, and it will flee from you.”

Disease is suggestion only, not reality, and when the suggestion is successfully shoved off, any effect from that suggestion is dissolved.

Suggestions of disease may feel imperative or overwhelming at times, but they never are. Disease has no power to impose itself on us. There is no power behind disease to make us have it.

God is the one Mind over us, giving us dominion and authority to live healthy and remain free of disease. This Mind, your mind, is never controlled by disease. Through the one Mind, we have power over disease to cast it out and render it harmless.

In the face of a bully, we have to know who we are. We have to stand up for our rights. We must be wise.

To resist disease, it helps to remember that we are not helpless mortals tossed about by whatever mortal mind throws our way. We are immortals living spiritual lives that are empowered by Spirit to stay healthy and well.

Stand strong in the face of any bully suggestion of disease. Ward it off. Shove it off. Push it off. Don’t tolerate it for a milli-second.

Stand with Truth and face the bully fearlessly. It will relent and back off. It has no other choice.

  1. Such a spiritually practical way of dealing with the suggestions that come to us—
    Thank you, Evan

    1. Yes Gwen , and helping us doing the same!
Thanks deeply for today’s SpiritView, Evan which is so strong and given us lovingly!
It’s so needed and lovely spiritual food for today besides the weekly lesson sermon.

  2. Thanks Evan. Could you give an example on how to resist? What exact words can we use? I always doubt wether I am using the right words. Thanks again.

    1. Peter, I don’t think there are right or wrong words…each situation though DOES have an antidote truth to melt away the lie about yourself or situation that is worrying you. I like to sit quietly for a short time ( or at least try not be talking with anyone ) and just KNOW that God gives you whatever you need every single moment and that includes the “right” words, the right thought to completely delete whatever error seems to be in your life. You might suddenly get an idea to look at a book or your email …..just do what comes to you no matter how irrelevant it may seem and you will be led to your answer. Often I have been searching for a right idea and then I go and check my email only to find that a friend has sent me some PERFECT article or video clip that immediately addresses the thing worrying me. Or I move a piece of paper on my desk and THERE is a note I’d forgotten was there with some perfect statement on it that is just the RIGHT to clarify my muddled thoughts. The same God is HERE NOW to guide YOU, who gave the right words to Moses to talk all those children of Israel into following him across a desert into an unknown land ..yes THE SAME GOD..here for YOU ! And you are just as important to God as Moses was…

      1. Diane thank you SO much for your response! What a blessing this article is and all the responses! Reading this today was absolutely a beautiful Love filled gift for me, just what I needed. Perfect for all! And what blesses one blesses all! ❤️

      2. Thank you, Diane – I was “led” a couple of days ago to Science and Health, p, 376: 6=9.
I felt like I had been under mental assault with vigorously expressed thoughts of disease by a friend. .I “sat” still and the guidance/directives came rather promptly. I have been gratefully hanging on to those lines ever since.

    2. Hi Peter,
In the Bible, Jesus is recorded as saying, “Get the hence, Satan!” when he was facing the three temptations in the desert. Jesus is my example.
      With love,
      Carolyne

  3. Thank you so much! What a strong directive for us when faced with a common problem – the disease bully. I believe it ties in with this week’s Lesson, (Science and Health first citation says “Moses advanced a nation to the worship of God in Spirit instead of matter,”.) . . . .

  4. Very good Evan, but if I may, I would like to
add the dis-ease of political contagion.
Everything right now wants to have a say.
But we are safe from any suggestion of
    disease/dis-ease.

Thanks again Evan, hope my addition was
    acceptable.
That is the contagion I’m finding hard to block out.
You used the word bully a couple of times.
We can’t be taken in by anything unlike God.
    Thank you Father/Mother.

  5. Thank you Evan – very helpful in these times. Spiritview always encouraging.

  6. I find it’s not words, it’s the thought they embrace. The words have been prayed for and enlist the truth which is felt. Love directed those words to us today. And were given to Evan to share.
(*Error, may well give us words to flatter and deceive, and they sound appealing. Those words only create trouble.)
All may find healing words, they come to us in consciousness from the Christ, ever present.
The word of God is readily assimilated and heal. God’s thought is more felt than verbal. It speaks to spiritual consciousness, the only real consciousness. Illumines with gleaming light, giving confidence, KNOWING, we are exempt from the evil suggestions of dis-ease.

Many hymns include “word” in the Christian Science Hymnal. Hymn 88.is right on the subject..

“Gracious Spirit dwell with me: I myself would gracious be, And with words that help and heal
Would Thy life in mine reveal: And with actions bold and meek Christ’s own gracious spirit speak.

Truthful Spirit dwell with me: I myself would Truthful be, And with wisdom kind and clear
Let Thy life in mine appear: And with actions brotherly Follow Christ’s sincerity

Mighty ‘Spirit, dwell with me: I my self would mighty be, Mighty , that I may prevail
Where unaided man must fail; Ever by triumphant hope Pressing on and bearing up.

*Written by Thomas Toke Lynch. (1818, 1871) a poet and minister in London. A free nature who questioned the limitation of creed. Opened Mornington Church, London. Influenced many young theological students hearing his fresh and inspiring message. His book of hymns, “The Rivulet” 1855, Roused much discussion in the Congregational body, but time has declared in favor of those hymns because of their depths of understanding * Taken in part from the Christian Science Hymnal Concordance, a very valuable resource.

Thank you for those INSPIRED words today.

    1. Thanks to David B for those insights “it’s not the words it’s the thought they embrace”..
I’ve always found such comfort in the words from a hymn “I feel they touch eternal Love and all is well again”.
When I was in the Air Force I knew a Chaplain who would say to the Protestant choir “If you don’t feel it don’t sing it“.
Today I know when I feel the truth behind the words “ all will be well”…

    2. Excellent resource, the Christian Science Hymnal Concordance, full of rich details of history; thanks for the reminder to learn from that re-source we have to cross reference our hymnal. Thank you.

  7. The power of thought is ever with us all.
Jesus declared: Get thee behind me, Satan!
Gratitude , Evan for unveiling the “ bullying thought.”
David, Hymn 88 is a lovely aid & all contributors are helpful…wonderful way to enjoy another glorious day “ of heaven on earth.”

  8. Resist the temptation to believe in matter as intelligent, as having sensation or power.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 218:25)

Rise in the strength of Spirit to resist all that is unlike good.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 393:12–13)

Resist evil — error of every sort — and it will flee from you.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 406:19–20 (to 1st .))

Instruct the sick that they are not helpless victims, for if they will only accept Truth, they can resist disease and ward it off, as positively as they can the temptation to sin.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 420:10–13)

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
    (James 4:7)

  9. “Stand against the wiles of the devil!” Just standing works, even with knees knocking, the devil, evil, error, will flee from you. You will find that the error was never there to begin with, it will dissipate like as with the wisp of fresh air removing something unwanted.

  10. Wonderful message today! I also find that when I get still and mentally ask God what I need to know that often a hymn verse or statement from SH or the Bible gently appears in my thought. The line from the hymn Mothers Evening Prayer “ seeking and finding with the angels sing” has to me come to mean these messages that come to thought often in the form of a hymn. I know I didn’t conjure them up myself and if I look up the passage, it usually holds just the truth needed. I have also had the experience of picking up A book or article that also meets the need. But if it’s hard to get quiet and I am feeling afraid, a good place to start is with those simple truths you can really trust . “God is here with me. God is the only power . God is Love and sends love. Evil is not real. I am God’s perfect child now and forever. Holding to any simple truth will open the way for the angel messages to appear. Thank you again Evan for your clear and powerful shepherding! It’s such a blessing!

  11. Thank you so much Evan for your clear and strong message, and for all the great replies that it has inspired.

  12. Well I do have some specific words that I use when I find myself ruminating, mulling over conversations, or hearing thought suggestions about feeling ill — “Shut up!” Jesus was that forceful when confronting errors at times. I find it works quite well because I can’t entertain sick thoughts when I’m mentally shouting “Shut up!” until truthful thoughts fill the void. Hope that’s helpful.

  13. Thank you, Evan, for this encouragement to stand up to bullying thoughts, “even with knees knocking” (fear) as Rod says-had to smile- it is so important! I started with a stand this morning, and with this post -and all the wonderful comments- I feel stronger in my stance.
Thank you all so much. Truth will prevail- well Infinity can’t not, can it?

  14. I read this right before I spoke with another church member this morning. She said, “Are you ready to do your metaphysics?” to which I replied, “Ready and perfectly able to meet whatever may try to come my way!” Well, we had been in a meeting at church last, and it seems that another member’s husband was in the hospital due to a fall, and they tested him and found he has the coronavirus. I was not at all fearful or shocked. I was ready to defend myself against this erroneous information I had been given, and I did just that! A little while later, this other member called me. I told her all was well no matter what the situation. I asked her if she would like me to read her the Spirit View for today, and she said “yes”. I could hear her beginning to cry while I was reading, but I kept on. She expressed such gratitude when I was done. She doesn’t seem to see very well and was wondering if Spirit View offered the capability of letting her listen to it. I told her it did not, at this time. Still, I was elated that I could share this with her.

Perhaps you could look into offering a vocal rendition of your daily spiritual ideas for healing.

Thank you ever so much, Evan!

    1. A recording to listen to would be nice, but I’m grateful for what I am able to do so far! Thanks for the thought.

I’m grateful you where there to read it to her.

    2. If the person has a computer or tablet or smartphone, there should be a program on or available for the device that could read it to her.

  15. I love the statement from Hymn 88 shared in David’s comment, “Mighty Spirit dwell with me. I myself would mighty be. Mighty that I may prevail, where unaided man must fail.” I see that I am not unaided man. I have all the aid and help I need from God.

Sometimes it seems hard to hold to these wonderful truths. Thoughts come that say, the world thought is so material and most people live in and believe in matter. I feel outnumbered, like the majority rules. It is animal magnetism trying to discourage me. But I’ve heard that one with God is a majority.

Thanks to Evan and all the commenters. You have all gone above and beyond today with your inspiring thoughts blessing us all! You are the Christian Science friends I’ve always wanted.

  16. After reading this blog and all of the comments, I’m definitely armed with all of the right words. Thanks to all!

  17. Peter, adding one more specific instruction for healing, which easily comes to mind from Science & Health, page 14
“…Become conscious for a single moment that Life and intelligence are purely spiritual, — neither in nor of matter, — and the body will then utter no Spiritualized
    15 complaints.”
Taking that thought in, loving the freedom, and living it, has healed me.

    1. Sometimes it helps if I stamp my foot or clap my hands and shout ” No, you are a lie. I will not believe you!” Then other good thoughts start to come.

  18. Thank you, Evan and all! The “bully” metaphor is so clear and tangible—-more simple to grasp. Very helpful.

  19. We are so blessed!!! Thank you Evan, and all brothers and sisters in Soul, Spirit and Christ, for so much healing inspiration! I’ve been re-reading Prose works since I hadnt read the entire book since 2011. I can’t recommend it highly enough! It’s 1,267 pages. If one reads 3 1/2 pgs a day it can be read in a year. Today’s gem for me is “Thank God! This evil can be resisted by true Christianity. Divine Love is our hope, strength, and shield. We have nothing to fear when Love is at the helm of thought, but everything to enjoy on earth and heaven.” Misc 113:23

  20. A great help today as always and all contributed to the
Destruction of false erroneous belief. Divine Mind is sole intelligence
Guiding each one today and everyday.

  21. WOW! What a feast of inspiring thoughts and words this morning – with our beloved Evan leading the way!! Especially good to use in regard to the current “political contagion” that must be defeated. Thank you all!

  22. I think I understand what Peter is saying. I like a clear sentence or a handful of words to turn to
I generally do get my words when I pray
