With the recent recommendation from the United States government against taking drugs containing acetaminophen for pain relief during pregnancy, there may be women distressed about what to do when battling pain. Some researchers do not agree with the government’s findings , but nonetheless, there is still going to be concern about what is safe. Fortunately, there is another way to address pain. Pain can be healed spiritually, making pills unnecessary.
Healing through prayer is possible because pain is a mental state. It may feel very physical, located in a physical part of the body, but the actual experience of pain is happening in the mind of the person feeling the pain. If the fear or belief behind the pain is eliminated, the physical sensation disappears too.
It takes humility and receptivity to spiritual truth for this to happen, but that’s okay. We all can gain from humbling the human ego and opening to divine Mind’s help in time of need. The benefits are worth the sacrifice.
Mary Baker Eddy gives us helpful guidance on how to conquer pain with prayer. She writes, “When the illusion of sickness or sin tempts you, cling steadfastly to God and His idea. Allow nothing but His likeness to abide in your thought. Let neither fear nor doubt overshadow your clear sense and calm trust, that the recognition of life harmonious — as Life eternally is — can destroy any painful sense of, or belief in, that which Life is not” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 495).
A consciousness of spiritual truth heals suffering. It’s a rule in divine Science.
Pain can feel stubborn and unrelenting at times but have no fear of it. Like pouring hot water on a block of ice, and watching the ice melt away, as spiritual truth floods human consciousness and melts away fear, any pain resulting from that fear melts away too. Healing is unstoppable. No fear equals no pain.
Prayer can heal pain. Spiritual truth is the best pain reliever of all.
A very very timely blog post Evan as I seem to be dealing with aggressive back pain (and other discomforts too) at the moment. Here’s a great article on the topic of handling pain that I’ve been finding very helpful, hopefully others find it helpful too:

Thank you for being a spiritual beacon of light to everyone that follows your posts!
This is so timely on pain – thanks. In re-reading some notes I took from JSH articles this morning, found this: “Man doesn’t have nerves; he has angels.” That’s a sweet, powerful and comforting thought. As “pain is a mental state” as Spiritview says, angels, God’s messages, counteract pain and minister to our consciousness.
Later in the article the author wrote: “The belief that nerves can inflict on man a persistent and unending report of pain has no place in reality. The song of angels, not the cry of pain, is man’s accompaniment.”
This is from the article The Angels of God’s Presence by FRANCES PORTER from September 19, 1964.
Thanks you Lindajane. Here’s a link to the article.

“Healing pain with spiritual truth” There is nothing fixed or permanent about pain. By Evan Mehlenbacher. From the August 14, 2023 issue of The Christian Science Sentinel:

wow thank you J ! though we had that article by Evan already on his wonderful SpiritView Blog, I understood some spiritual truths uttered here clearer, and they were very helpful for my own healing whatever.
Thank you J for posting it here again! ❤️
MUCH GRATITUDE, EVAN. I HAD A WONDERFUL HEALING AFTER READING THIS SPIRIT VIEW. I AM REJOICING FOR ALL OF THE GREAT IDEAS YOU AND EVERYONE SHARE HERE. THANK YOU, HAVE A GLORIOUS DAY !!!
I can eliminate PAIN, by expressing …
Purity | Affection | Incorporeality | Newness
Thank you, Evan, for the relevance in the spiritual view of overcoming pain.
Thank you, also, for the articles and thoughts shared above. I believe this is
just the beginning of a new awakening of current ways of the world waking
up to causes and remedies of many of the ills that mortals Seem to be facing.
This new approach is opening the eyes of many and uncovering a lot of what
has been hidden. As Mrs. Eddy wrote in S&H pg 96, “This material world is
even now beginning the arena for conflicting forces. On one side there will
be discord and dismay: on the other side there will be Science and peace.
The breaking up of material beliefs may seem to be famine and pestilence,
want and woe, sin, sickness, and death, which assume new phases until their
nothingness appears. These disturbances will continue until the end of error,
when all discord will be swallowed up in spiritual Truth” and … “It requires
courage to utter truth; for the higher Truth lifts her voice, the louder will error
scream, until its inarticulate sound is forever silenced in oblivion”.
I love where Evan states, “A consciousness of spiritual truth heals suffering.
It’s a rule in divine Science”.
Oops, sorry… meant This material world is even now “Becoming”, rather
than “beginning”
Thank you Evan for this direct approach to healing!
And thanks also to today’s contributors. ❤️
In Wednesday’s Daily Lift from Tim Mitchinson, he talks about waking up in pain and asking his daughter to read to him from S&H.
He says in part, “As I listened to the words she read, the ideas they expressed quieted my fears, and I could feel God’s healing presence…..and my body completely settled down. I thanked my daughter profusely and soon fell asleep. And that was the end of it.”

One phrase he said got my attention, that when his fears were quieted “….my body completely settled down.” This makes clear that body does not lead (it can’t even think), Divine Mind leads and body follows – (I heard a lecturer once express it this way).
Thanks Evan for always being timely and sharing what all need and crave to know. I pray these understandings spread outward more and more into the broader world consciousness, as well as deeper into our inner knowingness.
Thank you!
WOW ! so good. Thanks to all!
