Healing of physical pain

Would you like to understand how to heal physical pain with prayer?

Here’s an article I wrote on the subject for my local newspaper, the Tri-City Herald.

Click here to read it, “Could prayer take away physical pain? He got an on-the-spot answer.”

  1. Thank you Evan for this clear, jargon-free explanation of how pain can be dissolved into its native nothingness!

  2. i would love to read your article but the Tri city herald wont allow me to do so, without turning off ad blocking software which I don t know how to do ! maybe I m not the only one ? ….

    1. Gillian I too ran into the ads but was able to scroll past them.. I smiled because they were like spiritual distraction from this beautiful message. Kind of like what we face in everyday life when we want to keep our thought stayed on God and His goodness and our thought want to wondered. Or when we feel bombardee by false suggestions that want to cloud the Truth.

    2. A few weeks ago, I was playing in a local tennis tournament, when the lower muscles in one my legs tightened painfully and threatened to pull me out of competition. I had played a straight six hours of tennis the day before and was now in my third hour the next day, with three hours to go. What was I to do? I fretted. There was no time to sit and convalesce, yet I couldn’t limp around and play effectively either. I settled on the one option I could see at the time, which was to pray for a quick spiritual healing. One of the spiritual truths I’ve learned over the years, is that each of us have a spiritual individuality made in the likeness of God that is never hurt by anything that happens to the physical body.

This spiritual self is not found in the physical organism with all its muscles, organs, and bones. It is present in Spirit, safe in God’s care, and ours to enjoy through spiritual sense for all of eternity. I’ve also learned from my study of Jesus Christ’s healing method, that the more we understand our spiritual being with God, the easier it is to heal the physical body of suffering through prayer. What we experience physically, is improved by what we understand to be true spiritually. So, in obedience to Jesus Christ’s rule for healing, “Know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32 NLT), I prayed to better understand my spiritual existence with God that had never been hurt.

I remembered a statement from the Bible that states, “The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.” (Job 33:4, NLT).

It reminded me that I was more than muscles and flesh moving around on court. I was a spiritual being expressing spiritual qualities that included strength, endurance, poise, grace, dominion, calm, peace, and buoyant movement. I recognized that Spirit doesn’t get muscle cramps. Spirit doesn’t limp around in pain. Spirit manifests the ever-present harmony and peace of God. There is no strain or stress in Spirit. There was the calming and comforting presence of spiritual truth to enjoy in my being with God.

As I thought more about how expressing my divine individuality was the most important part of playing my tennis games, my thought relaxed. A noticeable tension and strain in my body melted away. I focused on expressing spiritual qualities, instead of trying to muscle my way through the next point. My thought calmed down and the muscles in my leg relaxed. Healing came quickly and I was able to finish the next three hours of playing with no trouble. I was grateful for the freedom.

      1. Izzy,
I did a copy/paste to a word Doc then deleted all the stuff that wasn’t Evan’s article. sort of a long process.then I read the comments and saw that you have reproduced the article for everyone. Is there any way you could share how you did this? It was so helpful!

  3. Thanks so much for sharing that helpful article with the connunity and us! Yes, ads were a bit distracting but kept moving forward as I need to do with another matter I’m facing, going ahead trusting each need will be met along the way! I hope to reread again today for more inspiration and continuing to pray for our beloved world and people. Peace to all here and around the globe.

  4. What a great article, such a clear explanation for anyone without an understanding of Christian Science.

  5. Under the picture of a church roof was on the left side a circle with a triangle. I tapped my finger on that and it gave a read-aloud (perhaps computerized) audio version of the article. I did not have to look at a screen after that and I was not distracted by any ads. I could tap it and end listening whenever I wanted. After hearing a computerized reading of Evan‘s article I heard a little bit of the next article about police investigating alleged childcare abuse causing a sleeping preschoolers to wet their pants, So I tapped the circle with the triangle or double lines to silence it. That gave me an opportunity to immediately apply the prayer and the spiritual logic, love and confidence, from Evan‘s article to heal my thought and provide an uplifting healing influence regarding the next article I did not finish listening to.

It worked fine for me, to be reminded to know and love the truth, to trust and reason from the truth, to correct my experience of pain from the IT band and sciatic nerve, my mid back side and down my hips, thigh, knee, lower leg, and foot. This article addressed the physical pain distracting me or that I had unconsciously reacted to as a long time victim of abuse learning and internalizing helplessness/despair/compliance and the story of injustice the causing repeated painful reminders and acceptance/wrongful obedience.

The first article is familiar from previous testimonies by Evan and remind me how to address thought trying to tempt me to accept as my owned. Evan reminds me to not attach emotions, reactions, or my own or another’s identity or history or destiny to the material mortal disconnected from perfection with infinite good, Spirit. To not be a apathetic to the lie with its consequential pain and distraction. The second article jerks me awake to immediately fight for justice to protect the children and protect good childcare providers from libel and fear exploited for profiteering off of the mommy wars in an unjust and destructive economic belief system. The second article demands that I feel and a firm love and respect for each individual that is denied in capitalism, to cherish the sweet innocence of the child that is in each of us, to nurture the protective caregiving that is the nature and the duty of each of us. To vigorously and proactively argue better than the best attorney in a court of law for the innocence of each individual we are as the child of God, so each only has the motive, opportunity, and means to bless and be blessed in the grand family of Spirit. With Spirit in control blessing all, and every thing that comes to our human thought at experience giving us only “lessons and blessin’s”, there can be nothing unfair or sinful to cause pain and suffering, dysfunction and failure to do one’s duty with power and grace. As with Evan playing tennis for six or so hours a day in a challenging competition, we can exercise our dominion with a sense of joyous play and disciplined focus, with sportsmanship and Justice. That sets an inspiring and fun example for others, expanding our sense of community and friendship, that increases the standard and ability for each of us.

    1. I apologize for how awkwardly my above comment reads. To avoid looking at a screen, I pressed on the microphone image and talked, wrongly trusting that the phone would correctly type voice to text. And I wrongly thought that after I read it and edited it, my corrections would stick. My smart phone must assume it is smarter than me, and using predictive software, changed the spelling and words that made my message less clear. An unintended example of the wrong thinking that would sabotage a tennis game or childcare situation, our spiritual reasoning, etc.

I trust your ability to understand and to laugh and forgive.

  6. Required subscription to paper to read your article. Never used to do that. I couldn’t find a way around that. If someone knows another way please post. Thank you

  7. It may have been edited out, but next time it would be good to give Science and Health by Mary Baker Eddy as the source of those ideas, so people know they can have the best equipped emergency room in the world sitting on their shelf or in their phone.

I LOVE that this experience was shared in the public newspaper!

    1. “We each reflect the perfect sound Mind which is God.” At the end of her article Christine Driessen says this truth.
Thank you dear Angie for the link to this article which contains very helpful and clear and simple, yet effective Truths so suitable to Evan’s perfect testimony!

  8. Thanks for the article Evan, always love to read what you’re sharing with your community.
This section stood out, “I recognized that Spirit doesn’t get muscle cramps. Spirit doesn’t limp around in pain. Spirit manifests the ever-present harmony and peace of God. There is no strain or stress in Spirit. There was the calming and comforting presence of spiritual truth to enjoy in my being with God.”

It made me chuckle to imagine God having a muscle cramp. We can substitute anything that may seem to appear materially and it is equally erroneous.

For those who couldn’t access the article, not sure but maybe one of these links will work. Love to everyone!

    1. Apologize if my comment ends up appearing twice. I added links that may possibly work for those who couldn’t access the article, and that triggered my comment to be blocked for moderation.

  10. Yay! Evan’s locally published article so clearly explains simply, logically Christian Science, without resorting to jargon or trivialized verbiage. When we are out & about, it’s imperative that we find expression for the spiritual truths we are learning through our study and practice of Christian Scienve without evangelicalizing or proselytizing. I’ve loved finding my own clarity, thus reenforcing my understanding, as I share Truth, our Science, with someone who may have no faith whatsoever. It’s a wonderful challenge to convey healing Love in new terms. It’s marvelous that Evan’s local, nonsecular newspaper has this feature on which his healing testimonies and explanations reach a different audience. Thank you, Evan!

  11. Thank you Evan for reaching out to your community in this most important way with your thought provoking article. The well described example of how you prayed and were helped on the court gives awareness and credence to the public of the possibility and practicality of spiritual healing. Sowing these seeds of truth into your community soil will bear crops of fruit to those who hunger and thirst. Bless you for your consistent and invaluable offerings.

Edith, I so appreciate the love you poured into your comment today,- especially in your admonishment ….”to cherish the sweet innocence of the child that is in each one of us. To vigorously and proactively argue better than the best attorney in a court of law for the innocence of each individual we are as the child of God, so each only has the motive, opportunity, and means to bless and be blessed in the grand family of Spirit.” This is a powerful prayer for the world today. Thank you,- and thank you all in this blessed assembly of spiritual thinkers.

  12. Dear Evan, I am very grateful for your wonderful testimony on your healing. As a commentor up here already said, you explained it so understandable with which meataphysical thoughts you worked the problem out, so at the end the absolute Truth was demonstrated and in a short time. In former times I often said, that with God all socalled problems are already solved – of course – as in God there are no problems at all. But that truth must be understood and demonstrated. Am working on it.
Thank you again Evan; your article is very helpful to me! :=)
