Health doesn’t age

If you want to stay healthy and well for decades to come, it helps to understand that health doesn’t age.

Health is as spiritual as love.

Does love age? Does love lose vigor, vitality and strength with the passing of time? No, not in any way. Love is spiritual and is always available to express in all its fullness by the heart filled with its presence.

The same rule applies to health. Health is spiritual. It is not affected by the passing of time. Each of us, as children of God, are equally capable of expressing abundant health at the age of 85 as we are at the age of 25. The number of years we’ve walked around on earth has nothing to do with how much health we can express.

Health doesn’t know anything about the passing of time, any more than love does.

Health is God expressed through us, and we are divinely equipped to express the strength, vigor, vitality, alertness, intelligence, vision, hearing and mobility of God at one moment of our existence as any other.

To stay well, understand the truth about health. It’s not a condition of matter that is affected by time. It’s a quality of Spirit that is forever expressed by God’s spiritual creation. And you have it to express every moment of your life, forever and ever.

Health doesn’t age. It is eternal.

“Scientific discovery and the inspiration of Truth have taught me that the health and character of man become more or less perfect as his mind-models are more or less spiritual”
Mary Baker Eddy, People’s Idea of God, p. 7.

  1. What a lovely message for the start of a so-called New Year! Enoch walked with God and his “many” years became irrelevant, – they were no more.
Mrs Eddy writes “One moment of divine consciousness, or the spiritual understanding of Life and Love, is a foretaste of eternity. This exalted view, obtained and retained when the Science of being is understood, would bridge over with life discerned spiritually the interval of death, and man would be in the full consciousness of his immortality and eternal harmony, where sin, sickness, and death are unknown.” SH 598:23-30
When our hearts and minds are full of love, time is irrelevant, nothingness, Our fullness as God’s image shows its eternal and healthy shine!

  2. If everyone knew this fact, rather the spiritual truth, that we live in the eternal now, we would never be concerned with age and the belief of health deteriorating with advancing age. “Man governed by God is always beautiful and grand. Each succeeding year unfolds beauty, wisdom and holiness.” As we age we grow in grace, in beauty, in well being We mature in our understanding of God and our unity with Him. So our health improves with this understanding. A spiritual idea which is harmoniously existent in Truth, God, remains eternally healthy, peaceful and joyous.
Thanks Evan for this lovely post. It helps us remain vigilant and not buy into the ideas of physical laws of age, when we are actually governed by spiritual laws and by Divine Principle, where health and harmony reigns supreme.

  3. This one’s a keeper! When u think how much the subject of ill health fills the airwaves — wouldn’t these thoughts just clear the air!

  4. Lovely message to be inspired by – thank you. What immediately came to me was what Mrs. Eddy says on page 120 line 15 of Science &Heath:

Health is not a condition of matter, but of Mind; nor can the material senses bear reliable testimony on the subject of health. The Science of Mind-healing shows it to be impossible for aught but Mind to testify truly or to exhibit the real status of man. Therefore the divine Principle of Science, reversing the testimony of the physical senses, reveals man as harmoniously existent in Truth, which is the only basis of health; and thus Science denies all disease, heals the sick, overthrows false evidence, and refutes materialistic logic.

So if we keep our consciousness filled with healthy and loving thoughts, these show forth on our bodies as health and harmony, since we learn in Christian Science that our bodies are the embodiment of the thoughts imparted to us by our loving Father-Mother – and these healthy thoughts are immortal and ageless.

  5. This is so important. In her Scientific Translation of Mortal Mind on pp.115-116 of S&H, in the third degree Understanding, she had her pick of hundreds of nouns but chose “health” as one of the spiritual degrees.
I’ve always had a hard time understanding the phrase “man is in a degree as perfect as the Mind that forms him.”(S&H p.337:10)Aren’t we all completely spiritual and perfect in every way now? I asked my teacher and she said until I understand my perfection I should ask myself: To what degree am I living eternal life now? To what degree am I growing in spiritual understanding? To what degree.am I demonstrating health?

  6. I ran into a woman when I was walking one of my dogs yesterday who had a spunky energetic 17 year old pug trotting along with her. I remarked on how young he seemed, then commented my spunky energetic dog was 13 and we discussed how we don’t unnecessarily vaccinate our dogs because its not good for their health, etc. etc. When I walked away I was thinking – now why would I have a conversation like that? Health and life are not dependent on vaccinations, or lack thereof, and why isn’t it just normal and natural for all “teenaged” dogs to be healthy and vibrant? your blog this morning really hit home Your comparison to how love can’t run out really makes this clear to me. And it’s true for all of God’s creatures. Thank you, Evan!

  7. Thank you, Evan. What a wonderful idea to realize that wholeness is always whole and that we, our spiritual identity, can never be any less whole than that.

  8. Thank you so much, Evan! This is a much-appreciated reality-check. I know I will express more and more love through the decades, but I don’t know I will express more and more health? How silly! Time to reconsider.

  9. I’m so grateful for today’s SpiritView, Evan, and for all the helpful comments. I shall print this one out and keep it by me.

  10. Does a sunbeam ever lose the qualities it brings from the Sun? Can we ,as God’s Ideas ,ever lose the health @nd well-being that God,Love is sending us every moment? Let’s remember to claim that well-being each moment of every day. Thank you for the reminder!

  11. Very thought provoking – one of those concepts that I find myself reading and thinking “well. of course!” why have I never realized that before?! Thank you Evan!

  12. I agree with the others …. such an important message and definitely a keeper! I was grateful that my daughter “called me out” recently for talking too much about age — including a tendency to speak somewhat pridefully about what I can do “at my age”, I appreciated the reminder that age is never a factor for anything! I’ve worked to be more alert. This blog was a perfect extension to that work. I loved the comparison of love and health — both spiritual qualities unaffected by age (supposedly young or old).

Thank you for your tremendous devotion, Evan, to responding to the God-sent inspiration that you share and which, in turn, serves to elevate thought!

  13. What a timely topic and you hit my age on the head until next week. However, who’s counting? Thanks Patricia for your clear explanation of “in a degree” something I had questioned but never asked about. I think our capacity to love more and criticize less increases with time. Why not our health – good thought!

  14. I agree….this one is a keeper for sure. The world needs to hear this and see it expressed in their lives. Me too.

  15. Thank you Evan. Your message today is wonderful!

To Patricia…I searched JSH-Online for references to the statement from S&H you mentioned in your comment and found the following from a Sentinel audio chat:

In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy says, that “…man is in a degree as perfect as” the Father. In a degree means a direct descent. And so you have this direct inheritance.

You can access the audio chat from which this statement is made using the link below:

Also note, the phrase isn’t “to a degree” but “in a degree”. To a degree would imply man is only partially as perfect as God. But I think “in a degree” means “man is as perfect as God down to the smallest degree (i.e. smallest measurable amount)”.

    1. I just found another explanation in a different Sentinel article:

And this brings to mind another sentence from Science and Health, “According to divine Science, man is in a degree as perfect as the Mind that forms him.” This enables me to see that in the relation of God to man, degree doesn’t mean “approaching some level of perfection.” It means “an exact measure.”

  16. Yes, I agree with all ..so good….and thank you , Evan! Belief in an age # is so seemingly in our face and ears everyday.

I love our hymn 136….we sang in church last night…”I love Thy way of freedom, Lord…” And in this verse…”I climb, with joy, the heights of Mind, To soar o’er time and space;”. I thought after singing it….I can replace “climb” …with “walk or jump”, even.

    God truly is Omni-action!!!

  17. Thanks so much Brian for that very timely article by James Spencer. Even though written in 2006, it is inspiring and covers a wide range of situations and how we can prayerfully correct our thoughts and those of others.

  18. Oh dear Evan thank you so very much for today’s specially wonderful SpiritView about our real health.
Yes it is absolute a quality of Spirit that is forever expressed by us as God’s spiritual creation and for every moment of our life for ever and ever!! That’s so very comforting!
Health doesn’t age, it is eternal! Oh I love all that Truth given us today so much. Thank you for that special treatment and metaphysical lesson, Evan, it is so helpful and does so good!!

Dear Kathyw, thank you very much for your mentioning that hymn 136. I love it too, it is so joyful.
And thank you all dear commenters for your so loving posts.
