Mind governs the body

June 2, 2022 | 32 comments

Here’s a thought-provoking statement Mary Baker Eddy made about her discovery of Christian Science:

“After a lengthy examination of my discovery and its demonstration in healing the sick, this fact became evident to me, — that Mind governs the body, not partially but wholly” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 111).

To the human mind, it doesn’t always seem like divine Mind is governing the body. If feeling pain or disease, it may feel like anything but God is governing the body. But as Christian Science explains, the material senses are not the avenue through which we discern and experience God’s government of the body. Through spiritual sense, the government of Mind is felt and experienced.

If your body doesn’t appear to be governed by divine Mind, pray for a change in perspective. Pray to see divine Mind in control, rather than fear, disease, germs, or whatever error mortal mind is trying to advance.

Material sense is mental fog. It gets in the way of seeing truth.

Clear out mental fog with spiritual truth, and discover divine Mind’s government of the body, keeping it healthy and proper— “not partially but wholly!”

  1. I find it helpful to equate Love with all the other aspects of God when pondering who is in control. For example, if Spirt is all embracing than I see Spirit as all loving in its embrace.
Or if I’m considering the control of Soul I would add something like this: “I will never leave you is the law of Soul to body”.

    1. Thank you Evan, and thank you John Q. That idea about combining Love with all other synonyms is just what I need!!

    2. Also, I just looked up the word gird, in this weeks lesson. It means to encircle, wonderful, encircle with Love!

  2. The picture shows fog.
    Fog. False opinion governing.
    Fear operating groundless.
And yet if unseen, fog can seem to
    be true.

    Not understanding fog while driving
could cause traffic to come to a halt,
and maybe that would be the safest
    option in some situations.
Being in a mental fog should bring
us to a halt in thought.

    Science and Health p. 392-22
    “Your decisions will master you,
    whichever direction they take. “

    P. 90-24. The admission to one’s self
that man is God’s own likeness sets
man free to master the infinite idea. “
    Thanks, Evan

  3. The picture is of fog.
    Fog. False opinion governing.

    Fog while driving can sometimes
bring traffic to a halt. And in
some situations it might be the
    safest thing.

When in a mental fog, stopping
is the only way to unsee the
    false picture.

    Science and Health p. 392-22
    “Your decisions will master you,
    whichever direction they take.”

    P 90-24 The administration to one’s
self that man is God’s own likeness sets
man free to master the infinite idea.”
The sentence could have ended with,
    sets man free.
The rest of the sentence is a gift

    1. Hi M,
Thanks for the quote from Science and Health, 90:24.
It is so fitting to today’s conversation.
To correct spellcheck’s error, the word “administration” should read “admission”.

  4. I had, thanks Evan on the first one, but
    it didn’t attach.
    I pushed, Done. Then post.
    Should we just push post.
Sorry to take time to ask, but it
    happens before.

  5. “Physiology is one of the apples from “the tree of knowledge.” Evil declared that eating this fruit would open man’s eyes and make him as a god. Instead of so doing, it closed the eyes of mortals to man’s God-given dominion over the earth.“ S & H Pg. 165:1-5

“It is the mortal belief which makes the body discordant and diseased in proportion as ignorance, fear, or human will govern mortals.” S&H Pg. 209:2-4

  6. First a follow up on yesterday’s discussion on eating. I came across this today from 1 Corinthians 10:31, “Whether therefore ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” The glory means the honor and praise and recognition of the magnificence of God. That would lift all we do, including eating, to a spiritual level.

On today’s topic, I agree with M that when in mental fog it’s a good idea to STOP, HALT, get quiet so we can then get clarity and see what’s really going on in spiritual reality. I came across this statement I wrote a while back when feeling frustrated about something that seemed to be lingering. “Why does it seem that this is not healed……the answer I heard was—Because you are relying on matter to tell you what is true.”

    1. That was a great answer to your question Rose and very helpful. Thanks for posting. Linda x

    1. Thank you for this excellent article Angie. I have saved it to my mobile phone home screen, as I do with many articles, so I can read it wherever I am. x

  7. Thank you for this important message! If we’re not staying Spiritually and Mentally alert at all times(!), it’s so easy to find one’s self unwittingly in a fog of whatever nature or form it might take. Wake up!, wake up!, wake up!, and stay in the governance of Divine Mind; always Consciously Knowing, alert, Loved, safe, and protected!

  8. Thank you, Evan and Angie for this strong message in the article. “Never plead guilty”
“Not me!” she said and kept cooking dinner and was healed. This article has so many gems of Truth. Printed it out for further study. Thanks for all the comments. LOVE

  9. Woah!.I just loved that article “Never Plead Guilty”. Thank you for sharing it, Angie….and everyone else, thank you for all your wonderful ideas. I love Spirit View…thank you Evan.

  10. Thank you, Evan, for this timely reminder.

“Mind, not matter, is causation. A material body only expresses a material and mortal mind. A mortal man possesses this body, and he makes it harmonious or discordant according to the images of thought impressed upon it. You embrace your body in your thought, and you should delineate upon it thoughts of health, not of sickness. You should banish all thoughts of disease and sin and of other beliefs included in matter.” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 208:25–1)

Declaring the truth that Truth completely governs the body precludes sin, sickness, disease, and death and is a precursor to health and immortality. This is self-immolation.

  11. Thank you Evan. Also loved the article provided by Angie, and all the comments.
    Some quotes by others:
    – The subtle motivation of mortal mind is to try to MAKE Truth true and is based on the misconception that Truth is not true at this moment, but will be true after we pray or while we are praying.
    – Health is a quality of God, because it exists without relationship to anything but it absolute source, Mind.
    – Real things are ideas, and exist unchanged in Mind, in spite of the fluctuations of material perception.

  12. Thanks Angie, I almost ignored this, then thought no, you better get into it then when when I opened it and saw it was Corinne Teeter I was so glad I opened it. I worked with her briefly many years ago, even traveled down to Florida to attend her association. Anything she writes I find valuable to check out.

    1. Thanks for sharing Betsy. Online I found many other excellent articles written by Corinne and have spent the afternoon reading them. So good! 🙂

      1. Sorry for having to read two messages Lol…the above comment didn’t post (thought it was because I attached two articles) so I just wrote the second comment. Actually many more amazing articles by Corinne Teeter than just these two.

  13. Wow thank you dear Evan, it is a very comforting passage on p. 111 by MBEddy. It is a wonderfully assuring divine Truth!
Thanks for the inspiring SpiritView Evan , and.I ponder it, specially the last paragraph, and it’s an inspiring idea to pray to discover divine Mind’s , Spirit’s government of the body , keeping it healthy and proper – “not partially but wholly” !!!
So wonderful, am working on it!

Thanks to all for your helpful ommentd; specially thanks to you, dear Angie, for the link to that article. Will it out and then stidy it in a quiet moment.
