Not a young body or an old body

August 3, 2021 | 38 comments

Do you think of yourself as having a young body or an old body? If so, it’s time to change that false notion.

As a child of God, you live in the ageless body of Spirit! This body is neither young nor old. It is timeless, eternal.

As the apostle Paul wrote, “There is one body, and one Spirit…” (Eph. 4:4). This one body, or Spirit, is God. We live, move, and have all being in Spirit, the one body of God.

The physical body is not our body. It’s a limited, finite concept of body.

Our real body is in Spirit, the infinite, eternal and intelligent. There are no weaknesses in this body, no diseases, no injuries, deficiencies, shortcomings, aches, or pains. It is a spiritual creation in the Mind of God that supersedes material sense, but is very tangible, concrete, and real to spiritual sense.

Identity with your proper body—the body of Spirit! It will spare you the shortcomings and fallibilities that come with believing one is an aging mortal body.

You have timeless, ageless, year-less, being with God, in the eternal body of Spirit. It is neither young nor old. It’s spiritual.

  1. This reminds me of something Nate Frederick said in a lecture recently..how ALLLL those people believing the Earth was flat AAAALLL that time, never made it so. So maybe the same thing applies here? AAAALLL those times you thought your body was fat, too thin, sick, old, stiff or sore, diseased or broken…..it sure feels and looks that way but that doesn’t mean it is true because you were looking from a too low perspective. I hope this is relevant?

  2. This is definitely what I need to read today Evan and Diane W your contribution is so relevant too! Thank you, So , I will expand my thoughts today to look at everything in my experience as AALL spiritual…whether it be person, place or thing. Remembering that what blesses me will also bless another . Grateful ❣️

  3. This is so needed today – and maybe not just by me, when getting up or climbing the stairs is accompanied by grunts and groans!! Thanks Evan for all these inspirational daily treatments.

  4. I find great comfort in praying every day with the following ideas – and applying them to myself and others. I find this very helpful.

Man was never born into matter; he has never been conditioned by matter or into matter’ therefore he can never grow old in matter, be sick in matter, or die out of matter, Man is spiritual, immortal, ageless, brand new every moment as the image and likeness of God.

    1. Maggie, I love your idea to think of ourselves as “brand new every moment”! It’s a wonderful way to think of the infinitude of God expressed in all of divine Mind’s creation.

    2. Hi
I like that. We do the basic care for ourselves. I have to ask myself when I choose to do something to or for my body, why?

  5. It’s so encouraging to hear reinforcements of our agelessness. The concept that man is declining with years like worn out machinery is a lie.
The false gives place to the true when we use the affirmations like those presented here this morning.
The world indeed is not flat. Thank you for that.!
Aging is not reality. We are image. Spiritual, perfect, ageless and eternal.

  6. Thank you so much for your very timely, perfect message. It’s just what I needed to “hear” and know right now. Thank you!

  7. Beautiful ! I love all the messages and comments. I love the analogy that the world appears flat from a limited perspective , when it actually is a sphere! We accept that fact even though we don’t see it on a daily basis. In the same way we can accept the great Truth that we are actually spiritual – proven and shown to us by the master scientist Christ Jesus and discovered by Mary Baker Eddy and presented in The Christian Science textbook. Our spiritual, ageless being is the present truth even though mortal eyes may not see it- we need spiritual sense to discern what’s true .

  8. This flows so powerfully and beautifully with the lesson on Spirit this week.
I was reading the lesson yesterday and contemplating how much we accept material sense testimony. When reality is really going on in Spirit, which is practical, tangible, and real. I prayed deeply to God to understand and experience more with my innate spiritual sense. What power we have access to when we are willing to discipline our thought and work to stay out of the mesmeric illusions of life in matter. What a gift!

  9. “We live, move, and have ALL being in Spirit, the one body of God.” I am so used to reading and thinking this sentence with a different word, “our”, instead of “all”, so this woke me up with a wonderful new understanding to celebrate. From now on I can improve by thinking “all” means I cannot, and no one else can, experience being any ungodly or imperfect way even for a split second. I knew this at some level for decades and had or shared healings with it, yet this is fresher and more powerful. Thank you.

Also, I was reading and thinking the command verb “identiFy”, but when it was the noun “identiTy”, it spoke to me with so much more compassion and relevance to all the people I’ve been knowing or reading about who have such an emotional sense of “identity” and “identity politics”, and so much pain when those identities are rejected or have conflicting and toxic consequences. They feel so heartbroken at not being heard or seen, but instead, being objectified and dehumanized and rejected, and often horribly abused or exploited or murdered because of their self/identifying or others’ projected “identity” covering them. The horrible industries where people are profiting off of these limiting labeled identities to exploit more and more people silenced, ignored, invisibilized, criminalized, and much worse. .

And how most of the people who self-identify as “Christians Scientists” who I have been seeing or hearing or reading from exude this sense — as I ignorantly did for decades and some could still reprimand me for — that they are the norm as not even having to think about all their social/economic/legal identities and privileges as white, American, middle income, housed, English-speaking, literate, able-bodied, untraumatized, presumed cis, heterosexual, free of police harassment and brutality, free of the countless times a day of micro aggressions and harassment and dehumanization, entitled to and getting all kinds of government support that poor taxpayers and citizenship-denied low income workers denied rights have to pay while not receiving and while also providing us the food and wildfire protection and dangerous work and healthcare so we can be comfortable and not even have to have anyone ever confront us with the moral demand for liberty, equality/equity, and justice for all. And how this white fragility or cis fragility or class/caste privileges fragility gets so dishonest and cruel in denial and hostility whenever Truth, Love, Principle demands repentance and repair. And since Christian Science has the answer for every single ill, sin, and suffering in the world throughout time, it is a tragedy when those of us identifying as Christian Scientists think and act the complete opposite, and so all these people hungry and starving for the healing liberation of Christian Science are turned off by our smug self denying identities opposing their identities. The unjustly privileged at the expense of others have the unspoken rule that we never have to acknowledge how our identities make us safer and healthier and more comfortable, and we presume entitlement to being comfortable at the expense of everyone else, all other identities. And how we can get so self righteously angry at and scapegoating and blaming the victims and making excuses for our own lack of caring curiosity and empathy and compassion and courageous social responsibility with effective and beneficial follow-through and friendships across all identities that Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy demonstrated and demanded of us all the time. How we lie to ourselves about how the statistics and facts show horrific systemic injustices to other identity groups the systems and industries protected us and our identities from. No matter what we think are our own or others’ identities. Thank you for the moral wake up call to rethink and change my behavior around “identity” and living church as the all-inclusive Beloved Community. Today during the heat, I will be delivering water sharing neighborliness and caring conversation as equals to people who are denied housing and safety and justice and recognition of their basic humanity and deserved love.

Thank you for those two words I had not expected.

    1. Thankyou for this food for thought.. I have been fortunate to have attended a weekly study/discussion group in my town at the United Church of Christ where many subjects including all you have mentioned have been faced up to and discussed. The bottom line we come up with is based on Love and caring for humanity. They support a food bank in the parish hall of the church. I have to admit that for most of my life I was somewhat naive about white privilege just taking my life for granted. Also taking the fact of being a CS for granted. this has led to deeper study and prayer for all Identities in the image and likeness of God..
I have used the statement “we live and move and have our being in God” many times and had many healings. I like substituting the word our with ALL. Covering all identities with Love.

    2. Not one of these claims has ever been true about God’s man. Seeing it is being it. To heal an accident we don’t lament the accident…we know an accident never happened. “White privilege” can only be a racist term since it-perpetuates the division rather than healing it. We must stop drinking the cool aid. Equality and equity are not the same…only equality brings justice for all and it does not come by the division of segregating or even seeing people by groups of any kind. There is One God, One identity, One Mind, etc. and all mankind has always included only what God is expressing through them. This is my understanding of how a Christian Scientist uses their tools to heal. We must stop listening to the sources that only lie. Lies are not real. Thoughts aren’t real. We give them the only power they have. If error had any power it would have just pushed Jesus off the cliff rather than only suggesting he throw himself off to prove himself. We heal by refusing to accept a lie has ever been, not by lamenting that evil is real (jumping off the cliff) and trying to heal it (on the way down).

  10. I once read that the word “body” should only be thought of as a body of knowledge/body of evidence of the existence of God. Body in this case defined as a unified collection of details, knowledge or information about a subject. We express that body of evidence of what God is — eternal, vital, vigorous, unchanging, joyous, all good.

I’ve been looking at “my” varicose veins with discouragement recently. I read Evan’s statement above and made a rhyming addition. Our true body has, “…no deficiencies, shortcomings, aches or pains…or varicose veins!”

A very good article with a spiritual view of aging is, The Transforming Power of Truth, January 1973 C.S. Journal by Mildred Booth Lord. Sorry I do not have a link but maybe one of you who has that access can provide it. Love to everyone today.

  11. Thank you Evan for your insightful and clear message that is such a needed topic to address. Through Mary Baker Eddy’s keen spiritual sense, in Science and Health pages 245 – 248 she expounds on the true beauty, health, and perfection of our body as Spirit’s expression. And she cautions us against conforming thought to prevailing beliefs about the body. These pages are worth reading and contemplating often to combat the belief of aging. The last sentence on page 248 says, “Let unselfishness, goodness, mercy, justice, love — the kingdom of heaven — reign within us, and sin, disease, and death will diminish until they finally disappear.”

Rose, I will join with you in repeating your jingle today…”My true body has no deficiencies, shortcomings, aches or pains.. or varicose veins!”

    Much love to all.

      1. Jane b and Linda, thanks for joining in with a little humor that helps us see through the trance of mortal beliefs about the body.

And thank you Jennifer for providing that article link.

Good to be with all of you, sending blessings.

  12. Jennifer, – thank you for sending the article “The Transforming Power of Truth”. So reassuring and powerful!

  13. Thank you, Evan! Such a clear view and understanding of our “timeless, ageless, year-less, being with God, in the eternal body of Spirit.” Beautiful!

  14. Am awfully grateful for this wonderful and healing treatment on “There is no age”
Thank you for the Truth that we have a spiritual body expressing spiritual divine qualities bestowed to us by God. How comforting that there are no weaknesses, no desease, no injuries , no shortcomings, no aches and pains. Oh dear Evan. such a heavenly state. But it is the Truth which makes us free – thanks a lot for your so blessing SpiritView! ♡♡♡

  15. Thanks Linda, Santa Barbara, for referencing S&H
pages 245-248. I looked them up and two citations stood out to me especially:
“…decrepitude is not according to law, nor is it a necessity of nature, but an illusion,” (246:30)
“Immortal Mind feeds the body with supernal freshness and fairness, supplying it with beautiful images of thought and destroying the woes of sense which each day brings to a nearer tomb.” (248:8)

  16. A confidential call to seventy mature students: (Longyear Museum)

In late September 1898, Mrs. Eddy founded the Board of Education to prepare new teachers of Christian Science. She also decided to teach again. In November letters and telegrams went out to seventy selected participants, requesting simply that they be present at Christian Science Hall in Concord, New Hampshire, on Sunday afternoon, November 20, to receive “a great blessing.” No further information was given. The invitations were strictly confidential. Her telegrams went to long established practitioners and teachers.

Of the seventy, all but two or three were able to come. There was an almost equal number of men and women, from diverse regions of the United States, as well as Canada, Scotland, and England, and from various walks of life, including clergymen, physicians, teachers, judges, and businessmen. Two members of the press also were invited to observe.

    “…to impart a fresh impulse”

The invited students gathered at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon, November 20. Edward A. Kimball read Mrs. Eddy’s words of explanation: “You have been invited hither to receive from me one or more lessons on Christian Science…This opportunity is designed to impart a fresh impulse to our spiritual attainments, the great need of which I daily discern. I have awaited the right hour, and to be called of God to contribute my part towards this result.”

A course of two lessons: experience lifted to a higher ground

The class consisted of two lessons, the first on Sunday. The next morning, Monday, November 21, at 10 o’clock, the second lesson began. In both sessions Mrs. Eddy was examining the spiritual fitness of the students, taking them higher in their understanding of God, and preparing them for the work that lay ahead. In “We Knew Mary Baker Eddy,” Emma C. Shipman, CSB writes, “When the lessons were finished, we were fully convinced that Mrs. Eddy had broken the bread of Life with us; that she had given us more in those two lessons than any other teacher on earth could give in any number of lessons.”

James Neal, one of the youngest students there, copiously recorded Mrs. Eddy’s two lessons, and afterwards presented these for her inspection. Soon thereafter Mr. Neal was awarded as CSD, and his notes remained in his possession for many decades afterward. They were ultimately gifted to his young patient Doris Dufour Henty, healed of distorted facial structure, Mrs. Henty went forward to become a renowned practitioner in London. The notes are now in printed forrnat titled “Man the Divine Fullness”.

Mrs Eddy’s own words in 1898: “We are alive in infinite Love. The more we understand the infinity of Soul the more do we understand the divine fullness of our own Being…and the more do we find our present conscious experience beautiful, effortless, versatile and rhythmic. Governed alone by and as Soul’s own conscious Self-awareness, our experience shows forth the beauty of infinite Soul in harmonious surroundings and events. The primal Cause has no knowledge of anything but Itself. My ability is the Christ and not a human endeavor.”
