Silence the naysayer

February 16, 2023 | 29 comments

In daily conversation, comments coming our way may be helpful or not helpful, depending upon the motive behind the comment.

If someone wants to build us up, they share supportive, uplifting comments with us. If they desire to tear us down, the opposite is heard.

The same rule applies to what we hear inaudibly in consciousness. Comments we entertain in thought may be acting in our best interest, while others may not. It’s wise to sort out the good from the bad and to cast out the bad!

For instance, if you hear a voice within that says you’re doing everything wrong, it’s wise to shut it down. It’s not your voice. It’s malpractice of mortal mind.

Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Christian Scientists, be a law to yourselves that mental malpractice cannot harm you either when asleep or when awake” (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 442).

Malpractice is affirmations that deny spiritual reality. They would build a case for evil and justify suffering. They are not to be feared, but shut down, with spiritual truth.

God is all-powerful Love, and always acting in our best interest. God gives us everything we need to act intelligently, to make wise moves, to stay spiritually minded, clear on spiritual reality, and to not be deceived by malpractice of mortal mind.

As a child of God, you are filled with goodness! You have much to give, and God empowers you to give it without limit. Any malpractice of mortal mind that would deny your goodness and disparage it, is wrong. It is to be shut down and left behind.

You have a good life to live and can live it!

Silence any mental naysayer to the contrary. Listen to God instead. Events will go better.

  1. Thank you so much for these daily nuggets of spiritual food Evan, they’re always so helpful in keeping us on the straight and narrow way 🙂

  2. Very important to be alert to this wise instruction. Thank you Evan.

The Court scene in Science & Health came to my thought.
We can keep ourselves in the Court of Spirit, and
identify ourselves as the The Judge of our own
thoughts, being alert to the fact that there may
be many mortal beliefs trying to make themselves
heard. When a disturbing thought tries to
make itself heard, we can say firmly and
with divine authority – ‘SILENCE IN COURT’.

God, who is all goodness and all-loving, has given us dominion over all that
is unlike Himself, so we do have this authority, and should be alert, and use it continually.
We are always filled with God’s goodness and pure love which protects us
and everyone with whom we come into contact – personally or in
our prayers for mankind. After all, that which is unlike our infinite all-
loving God, are only powerless suggestions, having no reality or power over us,
    as we all know.

This enables us to live the good life, which Evan has so beautifully explained to us.

  3. Thank you for your words on the topic. The mental ping pong of thoughts that fly across the net can go on for an entire day or days, depending on the challenge that we face. When finally a thought so captivates our consciousness that the challenge has been met and won. Prayer is work but so worthwhile, while to abandon the mental struggle with distractions can only delay a final victory. Prayer is rising higher not floating.

    1. Lindalou, I especially love the idea that “prayer is rising higher not floating”.

Thank you Evan, and appreciate everyone’s comments and insight. 🙂

  4. With so many issues seemingly challenging in the world
today, it can often appear to be overwhelming and
frightening, IF we accept them into thought.
Thank you so much, Evan, for this topic and for all who
help with prayerful, uplifting, comforting thoughts that
help rise above whatever would try to drag us down.

  5. Hate destroys first the hater thinking that is justification in self assured release from the emotional side of haters experience when it only binds them to their false belief in thought of the perceptived motive. It is limited and ignorant. The act of loving, divine loving which is unselfish in motivation allows in the light of true being and motive. It exposes the truth where the other hides it under the cloak of self justification. Thank you even for this most wonderful expose of truth.

  6. Jesus knew what to do with thoughts that were not really his. He said, “Get thee behind me, Satan!” with conviction!

  7. Thank you Evan. Thanks to all contributing inspirational thoughts. Holding unto right thought is exactly what we need to do.

  8. Thank you Evan for identifying and exposing the malpractice of a supposed mortal mind that would deny or obscure man’s spiritual consciousness.

In Pulpit and Press Mary Baker Eddy writes “Know then that you possess sovereign power to think and act rightly, and that nothing can dispossess you of this heritage and trespass on Love.”

Thank you all for your inspiring comments!

  9. I find this a complex problem. I found CS and took class instruction about 25 years ago. Since then I have had wonderful healings, but more importantly my life was mostly problem free. Especially of physical problems. Then 3 years ago while vacationing in MX I had a heart attack. My travel companion, who is not a CSist, asked that I let her call a doctor so I said yes and thus got into the medical system, as he had me go to the hospital, etc. I had continued to faithfully study the Bible lesson and pray. I had not been thinking about getting sick, etc. It was like out of the blue and I didn’t know why. Then, last Sep on another vacation to Belgium I had another physical problem and needed to go to the hospital emergency. I don’t know what more I could have done to prevent such occurrences. I pray for understanding and hold to spiritual Truth.

    1. The kind of health issues you mention are calls to keep advancing in understanding Life in Spirit.

A common belief in the world, is that this type of stuff develops with age. It’s not a belief we personally generate, but still want to actively protect ourselves from picking up unconsciously.

Mary Baker Eddy advises her students to daily defend their thought from malpractice at large. The suggestion of, “You get health problems with older age,” is a prevalent form of malpractice that needs to be guarded against and demonstrated over. You can do it! Truth is your Helper.

      1. thank you. I guess beliefs can be endless in their presentation to us. I find I have to work on not feeling burdened by paying attention. I think to remember the battle is not ours. I can also see I am tempted by fear but know the freedom is to reject and fill myself with Truth. And what we are being tempted with has no substance and is nothing but suggestion.

      2. Thank you very much for your wake up call, dear Evan, to our real self, our spiritual self as God’s image and likeness! This spiritual self, our spiritual individuality as God’s likeness actually knows no age, as God’s time is eternity!

For me the daily defence against malpractise is to study daily the lesson sermon, pray and listen to divine Minds safe guidance!

Wow am I grateful to understand the Truths of Christian Science better and better – thank you dear God and dear Evan!♡

  10. My heart goes out to Theodora. I had a similar experience 10 years ago and followed the same path and had the same reservations and doubts. I will not venture further in recounting my experience only to suggest to stay firm in your understanding and belief in what you have learned in Christian Science, You may be surprised at where your journey leads you and what it reveals as Mind’s wisdom.

    1. Thank you, William. I continue to be so grateful for CS, to study and pray. I do trust God as the one Mind that guides and directs me to only Good. I affirm that there is no pain in Love and Love is all there is.
Many thanks to Evan and all commenters and to all who have good will.

  11. This is perfect for me today, thank you dearly Evan. Some mental naysayers trying to talk very loudly to me, trying to pull my attention away from the Harmony that’s always present and available to me and to all of us. It feels so hypnotic and dire. It’s starting to loosen now as I read (and re-read) your words Evan and the truths shared by everyone here. Lots to ponder and looking forward to reading the article kindly shared by J. Peace to each of us today.

  12. Warren Berckman has a very good article about living in eternity in the February 13 Sentinel. He talks about how the belief of aging was kind of sneaking up on him until he became aware of the need to see what was true.
I too had been feeling weighed down by the untrue belief that I am aging. Just reading and pondering the truths expressed in the article made me feel more energetic , lighter, happier.

  13. Thank you so much for this affirmative and inspiring message. What a privilege to know of Christian Science and the ability to shut down mortal mind’s contrary thoughts as they attack us. Better thoughts deserve our attention instead. God is Good. Angel thoughts deserve our attention and are recognizable because they are Good. They motivate.

  14. Thank you for this inspiring and affirmative message. Angel thoughts deserve our attention, not mortal mind’s negative suggestions.

  15. Thank you very very much for these healing spiritual views today. They help me very much!
Here in Germany it is 6 am on Friday and I hardly slept as I had to struggle somehow with a thought an acquaintance told me yesterday, whom I visited. I prayed to know clearer that there is but o n e allencompassing divine Mind which is our Father-Mother God who gives us only good and right thoughts because we are His wonderful reflections.
Sometimes a comment doesn’t please us but through our prayer it could lead us to the Truth thought which comforts us. I am grateful that Christian Science is a religion of Goodness and Love.
I like this passage from the SV, namely to silence any naysayer or wrong thought to the contrary and instead listen to God, and that is the healing!

Am very grateful for all your inspired comments and the relevant articles here!⚘

  16. I am often concerned my loved ones do not accept my path of CS yet they are often so disappointed with material medicine. I have to remember who is in charge of us all. I know in someways they are glad of my path. I had a stint in the hospital out of nowhere that scared them terribly. I don’t yet know the full significance of that incident but it did point out I needed to go deeper and higher. The work is every minute of ceaseless prayer. I am so grateful I have something true to lean on.
