Face Goliath fearlessly

July 23, 2020 | 30 comments

In the Biblical story of David and Goliath, David had no fear of Goliath. David’s knowledge that he was backed by Almighty God, gave him courage and confidence to run fearlessly toward Goliath and topple the behemoth with one swift throw of a stone.

To many, the coronavirus appears to be a modern-day Goliath, threatening the life and health of any who defy it. But this is not so. It has no more power over us today than Goliath had over David centuries ago.

To keep ourselves healthy, we must not let any Goliath of mortal mind send us cowering into isolation or fearing our every movement. We can face any threat fearlessly and conquer it, just like David faced his Goliath fearlessly and conquered him.

God never made a harmful virus. God created a universe of Love for man to live in and enjoy.

The claim of a harmful virus is a false belief of mortal mind that would deny God’s omnipresent Love. It is an error of belief and is overturned by Truth.

So, rather than hiding in fear and letting mortal mind dictate your movements, face this lie about God’s creation fearlessly and topple it!

Stand up for Truth! Know God’s allness. Cast your stone of spiritual truth at the heart of this lie claiming power, when it has no power, and demonstrate safety and health.

Face the foe fearlessly and prove God’s omnipotence.

  1. Thank you so much for reminding us of how David defeated his Goliath and how we can do the same. I always felt that David had already defeated Goliath in his thought before he went out to meet him, because he was so aware of God’s allness and all-power and therefore the powerlessness of evil. So we too can realize that the seemingly harmful coronavirus is already defeated by virtue of its nothingness. As S&H says on page 381: “In infinite Life and Love there is no sickness, sin, nor death, and the scriptures declare that we live and move and have our being in the infinite God.”

    1. I couldn’t have said it any better. Thank you both for reminding us that fear starts in thought, and so does protection and strength from God’s love.
      .

  2. Thank ;you, Evan, for this inspiration! And thank you, DavidM, for your thoughts1 I am so grateful for SpiritView and for the friends we meet here!!:)

  3. “God created a universe of Love for man to live in and enjoy.” Our garden of Eden, the universe of Love, where God has placed us to enjoy the fruits of the knowledge of Love’s
allness. Thank you so much for this thought, Evan. A delicious Spiritual breakfast!

  4. I love “cast your stone of spiritual truth” Evan! Thanks for these thoughts!
I also love this sentence, “God never made a harmful virus. God created a universe of Love for man to live in and enjoy.” That gives me such a feeling of living in the most blissful place where no corrupt thought, so called dis-ease or thing can enter. An impermeable universe that God has created us as a part of.

  5. It seems that this is also a call to action. David had defeated the fear of Goliath in his thought, but he also RAN to meet Goliath and hurled a stone at him, thus toppling this threatening giant, so that he could cut off his head. What Action are we required to take ourselves? We must speak up! We must help others with their fear. Christisn Scientists can lose their reticence; we can be rightly directed to provide aid and comfort to others, just as Evan did with his newspaper article. We mustn’t be complacent. This pandemic does seem to be a battle, and we are all Davids, called upon to defeat this enemy!

    1. I like what you said about a call to action. It’s very true and something I’ve been thinking about. How wonderful it is to read our Bible lesson and our plethora of amazing literature and feel good and safe for many of us in our “comfortable human life,” but we need to remember that we are God’s disciples and that we have a DUTY and PRIVILEGE to live, demonstrate what we are learning, to both “study the letter and imbibe the Spirit.” Currently, I live somewhere that is very safe and far removed from any of the unrest that seems to be going on. I don’t want to be complacent so I’ve been praying about how I can make a difference. It has come to me that I can start in seemingly very small ways like in my driving interactions, or at the grocery store, or post office. I can express all of God’s qualities in every interaction throughout my day. I can pray and counteract negative things I hear people say. I can set time a side to treat current worldly issues. These things can seem overly simple, but they aren’t. They go out into the greater consciousness and have a ripple affect. I am seeing this more and more. I once heard deciding as a Christian Scientist just what to do or say in bringing aid to a given situation as “an artistry.” I love that! Maybe we need to treat our own thought quietly, maybe we need to speak up with our voice, maybe we get a clear directive to perform a specific action, etc.
I recently was reading in the “God’s Law of Adjustment” pamphlet. In the very last paragraph of the article “God’s Law of Adjustment” by Adam Dickey, It states, we are “minutemen.” I didn’t know that word, so I looked it up. What I found and wrote in my pamphlet is that we are “immediate responders in war.” It states: “We are minutemen, armed and equipped to respond to any call of wisdom, always ready and willing to abandon personal views or opinions and to allow that Mind to be in them ‘which was also in Christ Jesus'” Wow, if that is not a call to be on guard! We can all make a difference whether we are right in the middle of a big city with seeming chaos all around or quietly living out in the country.
A couple years ago, I worked as a career development counselor at a Job Corps center. One of my students who left the program unfinished while I was there and has many human problems to work through, contacted me through Facebook very late the other night when I was trying to go to bed much later than I like to. My first thought, was to ignore it and go to bed. My second thought was “wait a minute, this is an opportunity to put into practice what you are learning.” So I engaged with her and prayed in between our messages for what to say to her. It was a very simple exchange as I felt led by God what to say and at the end, I just told her that she was so loved. Her final response was several emoji hearts. And I felt that deep peace in my heart that that was all she needed to know that night. We can all make a difference. “It’s our duty to God, to our Leader, and to mankind. “

    2. Annie, love your powerful wisdom about being spiritual and human activists. We cannot sit on our whited sepluchres, but need to be true followers of Jesus and be AMONG those who need our prayers.

    3. From what I am learning, when a suggestion of sickness comes we need to take action to “unsee” it and declare “God is All” but with a suggestion of sin we need to uncover it and expose it. Evil has to be seen and handled and one who does not see it and handle it is abused by it until they handle it. (Being ignorant of it.) David saw the evil (a lie) and knocked it down with Truth. He knew a lie didn’t have a chance against Truth so he had no fear when knocking it down. What is there to fear in a lie trying to be impressive? I like Evan’s analogy of the Wizard of Oz behind the curtain in his talk about Animal Magnetism. When the curtain is drawn back and there is just this little man pulling levers…lol. Not so impressive anymore. What seemed so big and scary…just isn’t anymore once it is exposed.

  6. Bravo, Evan. This makes the point of how divine Love always meets every human need whether with Love’s statements or David’s 5 stones of Truth. Thank you! Nan

  7. David demonstrated power and confidence, defending the kingdom from a huge threat.
    When fear is expressed, the verses from these Bible verses are enlisted;
    I John 4:13, II Timothy 1:7, Psalms 23 & 91.
Most people have a Bible and now they are praying for protection.
These citations are very a common listing, attached to testimonies of healing.
They are offered to anyone seeking refuge from the fear of disease. On public media and to neighbors and family.
Thank you all for knowing the power of the word and the works of Christ, everpresent Truth.

  8. We could be thankful for the ability now to prove God’s word to ourselves and others in the spirit of Truth and Love.

  9. And not just the virus, but bullies and domineering unreasonableness as well.

The interesting thing about the Goliath story is that sling shots are notoriously inaccurate even by the world champion slingers. Knowing this, gave me a magnified sense of the fearless faith in God that David had.

  10. Evan,
I like your call to action.
“Stand up for Truth! Know God’s allness. Cast your stone of spiritual truth at the heart of this lie claiming power, when it has no power, and demonstrate safety and health.
Face the foe fearlessly and prove God’s omnipotence.” Just like David was called to take action when the “suggestion” of another power opposed to God tried to appear.

  11. For me the secret of David defeating Goliath was the confidence he had based upon what God had already done in his life..
God HAD delivered him from the paw of the bear and the lion..
David had confidence based on his experience with God in his life..
He did just say “Don’t worry God is all in all”.
    He had proof from experience..
God has been there for us…God will always be there for us..

  12. There are a few world wide ‘Goliaths ‘ to be dealt with and no doubt many more personal ones to be overcome. How grateful I am to know that stones of Truth are infinitely at hand ,ready to aim, ready to defeat any obstacle ,any time and any where. Gods Kingdom of righteousness and peace Is always accessible for us ,his children. Prophets knew it, Jesus lived it, disciples taught it,MBE Lovingly explains it and Evan shares it! Man is truly blessed❣️

Perhaps I’ve oversimplified…but you know what I mean.

  13. I am not as much concerned about the seeming fear of the virus, as I am the overreach of some to mandate, force people to take an experimental vaccine, of which are being rushed through where some, with conflicts of interest, stand to make a lot of money … (the root of all evil?), altho some are trying to be helpful in a mortal way. I know Mrs. Eddy states we must follow laws, but this, to me, is troubling.
I found helpful in the CS Sentinel, “God has endowed man with inalienable rights, among which are self-government, reason and conscience. Man is properly self-governed only when he is guided rightly and governed by his Maker, divine Truth and Love (S&H pg 106). This helped me to realize I could claim my independence from matter and my dependence on Spirit, God”.
Any thoughts on this would be so much appreciated and helpful. Thank you in advance, for any spiritual insights.

    1. Hi Carol, early on during this claim of pandemic, two short articles written by Mary Baker Eddy were pointed out to me regarding vaccinations that I find very helpful. Both are in the book, “the First Church of Christ, Scientist and Miscellany.” P. 219 line 26- P. 220 line 5 and P. 344 line 22- P. 345 line 5 are what I found most helpful on this subject.

    1. Thank you, Martine for this article. I have used this poem a lot but did not know the author. This article is a keeper. I will read it a few times and am sharing it.

  14. So grateful to Evan & all who shared. Many times “friends” who are NOT CS give much work in denial & affirmation to be done. As MBE says: Watch, work & pray. (Repeat, as needed) “We is our think!”

  15. “Face Goliath Fearlessly” is needed and most helpful. Thank you, Evan, and thanks to all who share on this blog.

  16. Thank you Evan and Spiritviewers! I have my three stones
and am prepared to defeat the Goliath of despair I have felt from isolation. One of my children has remained isolated these five months- and communication is sparse. I am reminder this morning that we are alone ( all one) with God and no one is left out!! Martine thank you for that wonderful link!! Much love to you all❤️

  17. Psalms 91 points out the illusion of material sense where it says “Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked… Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.”
As always Evan, Thank you for your model of excellence. You inspire your readers with strength, confidence and practical guidance. And thank you Martine for the link to “Five Smooth Stones”.

  18. In this week’s Bible Lesson on “Truth,” we learn WHO God is, WHAT God does, and what WE must do as His children. Take a look at ALL of these things that are in one Lesson! In God is: salvation, glory, He is the Rock, might, strength, refuge, mercy, majesty, Truth, righteousness, greatness without measure, wondrous, compassion, grace, long-suffering, plenteous in mercy and truth, honor, right, divine Principle, Spirit, Life, Truth, Love, substance, intelligence, wisdom, being, immortality, cause, existence, truthfulness, goodness, peace, permanence, divine health, infinite, holiness, uprightness, the Way, liberty, victory, freedom. God: shows, teaches, leads, subdues, controls, destroys error, creates, governs, understands, heals, inspires, blesses, feeds, gives, sows, delivers, frees, equalizes, annuls the curse, fulfills Scripture, annihilates error, is merciful and kind, imparts, uplifts, leads, unifies, constitutes, and ends wars. We must: make a joyful noise, a loud noise, rejoice, declare, sing praises, be joyful, worship, glorify, keep His covenant, cast out error, heal, act with authority, understand, recognize, have faith, know, keep the Commandments, be loyal, be dutiful, show meekness, love one another, do good deeds, be grateful, feed His lambs, feed His sheep, reveal reality, prove, be innocent, show inoffensiveness, follow, pray, desire after good, grow spiritually, have patience, employ, entertain, fear, perceive, work righteousness, believe, receive, prepare, reflect, be pure, bless, and love. With ALL that God is and ALL that He does, it is no wonder David had unmovable faith in the Almighty God to back him up. Our God today is that same God of David’s time. God is from everlasting to everlasting. God existed before the Corona virus. That’s why “Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need.” God was here first, before any suggestion of evil or sin or disease or death ever raised its ugly head. God is good, and God is All. Thank you, Evan, for every smooth stone you sling at error, and thank you, SpiritView followers, for doing the same. God, Truth, is always the victor! Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful comments.

  19. Thank you Evan and EVERYONE posting. I have collected the references to other supportive CS articles and MBE quotes. I love how you shared protecting gems from our lesson, Cheryl, and intend to copy your entry to review lots more. Again, Thanks EVERYONE! I will show my gratitude by putting into action what YOU ALL have shared!!!
