The blessings of moral courage

November 4, 2021 | 24 comments

If you ever find yourself taking a position that is at odds with popular belief, but are spiritually clear that what you are doing is morally and spiritually right, you will not suffer for your choice. You will prosper.

The prophet Daniel, in the Bible, was persecuted for worshipping his God and not following the public ruling to bow to another god. He was thrown into a lion’s den, presumably left to be eaten by hungry beasts. But Daniel was not afraid. He continued to love his God, pray to his God, and to serve God. His faith was richly rewarded. The lions left him alone. He was brought out of the den triumphant, and made ruler over the entire land, as the king’s highest officer.

What mortal mind tries to take away from us materially for acting on a spiritual principle, God makes up for spiritually. When guided by a clear moral compass, fear no loss. You have truth on your side. Look for the gain. It is monumental!

As Mary Baker Eddy wrote, “Moral courage is ‘the lion of the tribe of Juda,’ the king of the mental realm. Free and fearless it roams in the forest. Undisturbed it lies in the open field, or rests in “green pastures, . . . beside the still waters”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 514).

To live with a clean conscience, a guiding Principle, and a sincere heart with God, is a rich, rewarding, happy and healthy way to live. There is no loss to fear.

The long run blessings of moral courage far surpass any temporal loss. They make us a better person, keep us feeling close to God, strengthen our position with truth, eliminate the weakness of cowardice, and fill us with spiritual dominion, power, and authority to conquer wrong with right.

What mortal mind appears to take away temporarily, is quickly replaced by what God has provided for us eternally.

Moral courage brings blessing.

  1. When we examine our hearts & pray to be “cleansed” we seek only to BE as God knows us, pure and loving. I really appreciate going deeper into this:”Guided by a clear moral compass, fear no loss.” I’ve fretted for years over what I thought was an immoral injustice, but if I am indeed living with a clear conscience and knowing that God is my only Life, there can be neither regret nor remorse. I’m trying to know this absolutely.
    Thank you, Evan❤️

  2. These thoughts are so very helpful and comforting in today’s environment, especially.
Many are standing up for their convictions in the face of adversity, but going against
the grain is not easy. It does take great courage to do what we feel is right, even if
so many more are thinking in other ways. Knowing that “mortal courage brings blessings” is
a wonderful Truth to hold to ~ the Truth of God’s rewards and Love’s ever presence
and power. Oftentimes it seems this is a lonely stance to take, but the love and
togetherness expressed here is truly very comforting. I thank you, Evan, for this venue
and all who share and think in harmony.

    1. Carol, I appreciate your statement that it takes courage to “do what we feel is right, even if so many more are thinking in other ways.” I sometimes feel overwhelmed that the “majority” are strongly believing a certain way in these times. But I am working to remember that just one with God is always a majority. That is where all the power lies, in aligning ourselves with God, not making mortal belief into a “real thing.” I don’t think this so-called majority of people can actually accept material beliefs. In their (our) real, holy nature they (we) cannot help but know what is true — because it IS true; nothing can change the facts of being. Trying to see that mortal beliefs cannot attach themselves to God’s divine ideas.

      1. Thank you, Rose. I, too, like to keep repeating to thought, that One with God Is a Majority.
I believe that if more knew the truth and actually knew the Truth/God, that they wouldn’t
go along so naively with these mortal beliefs that seem so prevalent. I am remembering
the saying that it takes one candle to light up the room. When we let our light shine,
darkness has no place to hide and disappears into it’s native nothingness.

  3. The Christian Scientist is alone with his own being and with the reality of things.
(Message to The Mother Church for 1901, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 20:8–9)
I heard this in a testimony in yesterday’s Wednesday online testimony meeting of TMC. Mrs. Eddy has a lot to say about standing with Truth. And aren’t we grateful that she did. Thank you, Evan and all who share such tender and helpful comments.

    1. C. I too listened to the Wednesday online testimony meeting and heard that quote you mentioned: “The Christian Scientist is alone with his own being and with the reality of things.”

I have never heard or read that before. But it really struck me. I kept repeating it over and over and thinking about it all evening. It made so clear to me that NOTHING comes between us and God. In this relation to this blog post, nothing can get in our way of taking a strong moral stance with God. How comforting and powerful.

    1. Great article thank you for posting it. There are many concepts I was having a couple days ago that are parallel and now that I’ve read this understand them to be part of the clearing of the mist of the human to witness the reality of spiritual understanding.

    2. Wow “J”, that os a wonderfully clear and understandable arhicle. it is very very helpfu, thanl you very.much for ppsting here!♡

Thank you Josef, i agree what you comment!☆

    3. J, the sentinel article to which you referred was written prior to my becoming a student of Christian Science, so I’ve never read it before. Approximately two hours earlier I took a fall and was quite uncomfortable physically. This article has been a very great help to me. Thank you so very much for sharing it with all of us.

  4. In former times for me moral courage was to stand up in church and give a testimony.
Today moral courage for me is to out me as a Christian Scientist to neighbors or perhaps to a doctor if that would be neccessary.
Once I had an experience when I met with other heirs in the house of our Cousine who passed on. We wanted to see what each heir wants to take from the interieur of that house. When I said that I had something more important to do they asked what. And I had at that moment not the courage to tell them that I had to go to a lecture of my CS church and that I was an usher. But I myself felt very good prefering to go to the lecture of my CS Curch in Hamburg. For me it meant “God first”! Am grateful to demonstrate more and more moral courage through the teaching of Christian Science which are healing and blessing us all.

By the way, I too did not get this wonderful SpiritView today in my email inbox.

Dear Evan, thank you very very much for your healing and blessing SpiritView of today! I need it very much! ♡♡♡

    1. Hi thanks SpiritView Team, now this came into my inbox, wonderful! ♡
And thank you Rose for your good comment!♡

  5. Evan your comments are so timely especially in America right now and around the world as society seeks a moral compass.
Lets hear it for courage to think clearly and do our highest sense of right.

  6. Every sentence in this Spiritview is immensely helpful but I especially love this idea
Whatever mortal mind appears to take away from us temporarily is quickly replaced by what God has provided for us eternally,.
My life as a student of Christian Science is filled with proofs of that statement. What a blessing today to see this reminder in print. Thank you Evan !

  7. Thank you, Evan, and each of you for sharing your thoughts on how you are praying/standing in your Loving Truth with this subject during this seemingly ever-challenging time as a C.S. I value and appreciate this forum and community, and each of your messages. It is so helpful!

Yesterday I listened to the Broadview/C.O.P. webinar, which primarily discusses the issues of retirement as a C.S with Medicare, etc. in the USA, but she (Leslie Connery) also touched on at the end, how they (Government Relations Council of the C.O.P.) would appreciate our (C.S.’s) prayers of support for the issues they are facing (and thus all of us) with the challenges of educating Congressmen and others in the government about C.S.’s spiritual choices for our healthcare, etc. in time for these votes on healthcare. I’ll share the link to the webinar (hoping it’s okay to do so!) in case anyone else is interested.

  8. The first sentence of this post has just cinched it for me. I have been praying about (and anxting over) an untenable situation in a group I am in, for years and now I realise I SHOULD go ahead and do what I feel is right without fear of consequences that may affect others. When you can see how progress can be made but others are scared of change, you cannot be afraid of leaving a sinking ship. Better than going down WITH it!
This morning some fresh ideas were shared with me from an unlikely person and now I open my computer and read this. Thank you so much Evan for your continuing inspiration and awareness and for sharing that with all of us. You have absolutely MADE YOUR MARK in the world in such a good way!

  9. Thank you for these timely thoughts, Evan. Just before I received this article in my email, I made a decision based on Principle. An employer was requesting certain medical proofs in order for me to participate. Even though the answer was very clear to me from the beginning, I toiled over the decision unhappily for many days. The moment I decided to decline the position based on Principle, I felt absolutely liberated and happy again! Thank you for confirming the courage to stand on Principle.
