The signs of Christ’s coming

May 22, 2020 | 43 comments

What are the signs of Christ’s coming? Is it destruction, annihilation, rampant pestilence, suffering and disease of pandemic proportions over the face of the earth?

Many who subscribe to “End Times,” prophecies see world calamities as possible harbingers to Christ’s second coming. It seems that they almost eagerly await more calamities to occur as proof that Christ’s second coming is getting closer.

When I think about the coming of Christ, I think about love, peace, comfort, and healing.

I find great comfort in knowing that Christ is already here! I don’t have to wait for some future event to fully experience the healing and redeeming power of Christ. The second coming has already occurred in the thought of anyone in tune with God and following God’s will.

Jesus Christ was not about annihilation and destruction. Jesus Christ was all about restoration, peace, life, and healing. If anything is going to end, it is not God’s good operating in our lives. It is evil, suffering, disease, and death that end. Life with God continues forever.

I like what Mary Baker Eddy has to say about the signs of Christ coming. She wrote, “The prophet of to-day beholds in the mental horizon the signs of these times, the reappearance of the Christianity which heals the sick and destroys error, and no other sign shall be given” (Science and Health, p. 98).

Whenever someone turns to God in prayer and experiences healing, they’ve witnessed a sign of Christ at work in their lives. Christ is already here.

Christ’s coming is not about destruction. It’s about redemption, restoration, and healing. These are incredibly positive events to eagerly anticipate and participate in!

  1. Beautiful picture Evan. It depicts just how I feel when I experience an aha moment during my daily study of Christian Science. Absolutely love and agree that the signs of the Christ in our lives are the healing and overcoming of any error or obstruction trying to intrude on our consciousness. At this point in time I like to think of the Christ in me being Love. Love for every person or situation. Thank you for today’s comforting message.❣️

  2. Thank you so much for this wonderful uplifting reminder that Christ is here NOW for
every one of us to know. What a comfort…knowing this!

  3. Agree with Barbara – stunning photo! Whenever I hear or see an Ambulance go racing past, or see anyone in physical difficulty etc the lines from hymn 412 always come to me: “The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking, Unloosing bonds of all captivity”. The loving Christ has never left and is always present to help, comfort and heal. Thank you for this reminder.

    1. I love your sharing, Linda. I would ask my small Sunday school students, “Where is God?” And they’d answer with hand and arm gestures, “God is here, there, and EVERYWHERE!” And that’s so true of the healing Christ as well!

  4. I agree Evan that Jesus Christ is here already, and has always been here. It is our function to recognise Him or Love in every person and situation. I am grateful for your daily reminders.

  5. Yes! “The Christ is here, all dreams of error breaking”. I too love that hymn.
Thank you, Evan, for this reminder! As always, spot on!

  6. Best ever! Reminded me that the only result of Jesus Christ’s work was the destruction of tyranny, disease, sin, death. He brought healing, forgiveness, resurrection, and all inclusive Love. Thank you for the practical response to the current mental atmosphere of fear.

  7. Oh, “The Signs of Christ’s coming” directed me to my favorite book of poems, JUBILEE AND OTHER POEMS, by Peter Henniker-Heaton, and after much reflection, wanted to share this one:

DIVIINE CONTENTMENT HEALS by Peter Henniker-Heaton

This is God’s day; I do not wish it
To be any other day or time.
This is God’s place; I do not want it
To be any other place. I am
    About my Father’s business now and always;
I do not long for any other employ.
This is God’s presence; His company is sufficient
    Fully to satisfy.

Here is God’s holiness; no further wholeness
    Can man require.
Under His laws we live, no wiser government
    Can man desire.
    Man is complete and perfect in God’s own likeness;
Man does not yearn for a different nature or name.
Such are the facts that spiritually acknowledged
Compel all human evidence to conform.

Such are the facts that, morning by morning welcomed,
    Uphold, direct, inspire
Our every footstep and will safely bring us
    Through wilderness or fire.
Such are the Christly facts that daily held to
    Evangelize, redeem
All human thinking, till signs of healing follow.
In such divine contentment is heaven and home.

Thank you, Evan, for that picture of the morning light, symbolic of The Christ.

    1. Peter Henniker-Heaton wrote this poem while confined to a bed during a period of several years due to paralysis. What a Christian Science hero!–to maintain his faith and to grow in spiritual understanding, all the while desiring to bless others through his prayers and poetry. After his healing, he went on to be a well beloved CS lecturer.
      Thanks for sharing, Jo.

      1. Paul, Yesterday, I absorbed like a sponge, the article The Illusion of Animal Magnetism. Lately, during this SIP, I have felt like someone put a spell over me. And reading this article was the Big Red Flag that I needed so stop this hypnotism/ breaks its spell on me. And to go further, to unsee the power of am over this individual.
Now this article on Earth’s preparatory school, which when I started reading it reminded me of the article Borrowed Problems, and sure enough, there in this article has much of the wisdom of Borrowed Problems within it.
Mary Baker Eddy wraps it up in Misc. Writings: An Allegory
I may not have a printer, so I sure hope I may get these printed at Staples asap!
Thank you and keep them coming!! A wealth of good! Thanks Evan for this fprmat!

      2. ooops Cathryn, I meant to reply to you, as well. A treasure trove of heartfelt poems made it very difficult to choose just one for today. When I first took up the study of CS, and worked at the CS Publishing House, I did see on occasion, Rose Henniker – Heaton. Treat.

        1. I should have added about Rose Henniker- Heaton. This tall impressive woman would carry her husband, Peter, over her back and shoulders, up the steep stairs to the second floor, when the bombing happened almost daily during the war.
As Cathryn stated, Peter was unable to walk due to years of paralysis, but this never stopped his knowing his real being that God created him to be. Total Faith.

    2. Love, love LOVE your reference to Peter Henniker-Heaton’s book of poems, JUBILEE and Other Poems.

Such a succinct, loving, sweet poem with all the confidence we need every moment of our day. Thank you JO

  8. Thank you dear Evan for sharing such a beautiful portrayal of “Hymn 23:4 “Thou gentle beam of living Love” … uncluttered by mortal mist-interpretations or worldly beliefs.
    Hymn 148:1
    In heavenly Love abiding,
    No change my heart shall fear;
    And safe is such confiding,
    For nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me,
    My heart may low be laid;
But God is round about me,
    And can I be dismayed?”

  9. Your message today, Evan, is like a prayer of affirmation for all those waiting for the Messiah to return. The Christ is here, near and dear, speaking to human consciousness…”All, all is well…I am with you…I have never left you…abide in me” I so appreciate hymns already mentioned as they are the ones that immediately came to mind…and, wonderful PHH poem…beautiful! Such a lovely And powerful way to start my day. Thanks to all!

  10. What struck me the most was “God’s good OPERATING in our Lives.” Thank you. What a wonder filled way to begin the day. Yummo!!!

  11. Such beautiful thoughts shared by everyone..living out in the west one loves to see the sun rise.. for me it’s so symbolic of the rising of the light of Christ in my life.
When that warm embracing sun comes up EVERYTHING is better.. the plants stretch their arms, animal scurry about and play, thoughts feel fresh and free.. The darkness fades and I feel so alive.
“This IS the day the Lord hath made let us be glad and rejoice in it..”

    1. You are poetic!

I felt so alive tonight, riding the waves in the ocean!
Just bought a full wetsuit and now I can enjoy the ocean most of the year! Yippeee!

  12. NOW is the Christ here for all…
Thank you Evan. I’m grateful for those who shared timely hymns. I receive so much good each & every morning. Keep sharing…please!

  13. Thank you so much, Evan, for the encouraging reminder that “Jesus Christ was not about annihilation and destruction. Jesus Christ was all about restoration, peace, life, and healing.” It seems the modern “prophets” can only prophesy doom and gloom. It is reassuring to know that picture is not a “set in stone” actuality because Jesus promised “I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” (Matt. 28:20) and “Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”
    (Matt. 5:17)

I too love the hymns and have used “The Christ is here” in that particular hymn to acknowledge it in every line of the hymn. He [The Christ] comes [is here] to bless thee on his wings of healing, etc.

Thank you for the poem by PJH-Heaton and for the info regarding where to get his writings. I always find the commenters add so much to this spiritual lift each day and I thank God you were led to provide this awesome resource, Evan. Thank you all.

  14. What a great way to start the day with Spiritview. It has rained3 days here and the light of this session with all has lifted the gloom.
    Thanks all.

  15. Thank you for a really wonderful Spirit View, Evan. The comments and links are of such value to my thought and I am forever grateful. I have taken so many notes, I feel tired but quickly know that I am not.
    Love to all❣️

  16. Thinking about “end times,” Mary Baker Eddy has only one reference to Armageddon in her published writings, and the whole article in which it appears is very appropriate to this present situation. ( See Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, pp. 176-177)
Part of it reads: “Never was there a more solemn and imperious call than God makes to us all, right here, for fervent devotion and an absolute consecration to the greatest and holiest of all causes. The hour is come. The great battle of Armageddon is upon us. The powers of evil are leagued together in secret conspiracy against the Lord and against His Christ, as expressed and operative in Christian Science. …
“What will you do about it? Will you be equally in earnest for the truth? … Will you give yourselves wholly and irrevocably to the great work of establishing the truth, the gospel, and the Science which are necessary to the salvation of the world from error, sin, disease, and death? Answer at once and practically, and answer aright!”
SpiritViewers, your contributions, triggered by Evan, show that you are willing! Let’s dedicate ourselves, not only to receiving and sharing inspiration, but to doing what Christ Jesus and Mary Baker Eddy demand of us. Let’s “work, work, work, watch, and pray” to see that God is making an utter end to everything unlike Himself, covid 19 included.

  17. Paul, thank you for sharing Daniel Jensen’s address. A few of my relatives were his students. I love reading things written my him. I take away so much by the community sharing . Thanks , Evan.

  18. The reminder that the coming of Christ is not a timed event, but rather an everpresent healing event reassures depressed hope.

  19. Thank you, Evan for your crystal clear explanation of Christ’s everpresence. It is very helpful; and i like the inspiring foto. And the passage from SH by MBEddy makes it so clear; yes a wonderful passage. The second coming of the Christ, I understand, is Christian Science, rightly understood and applied redeems, comforts, restores and heals the world, just as Jesus did, and what Evan explaines up here. ☆☆☆

  20. My deep and sincere gratitude to Paul for referencing the article by Allison Phinney. I’ve just spent a lot of time pondering each statement and applying it to my current situation. I will save this link so I can continue to work with this. Words can’t adequately express how much this means to me. THANKS!!!!

  21. I apologize for my confusion. The article I was commenting on was “Earth’s Preparatory School” by Daniel Jenson – OUTSTANDING!!!

  22. I too love “Divine Contentment Heals”. It was set to music for my wedding by Donald Spies. He was a professor of early music at Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin. He was a Christian Science married to Lois Carlson who became a Christian Science teacher. Both were very good friends. I have never gotten the solo published. But it would be nice to have it done. That poem has been a source of inspiration to me for many many years. Thank you for quoting it.

    1. How lovely for you Susan to have that poem set to music for your wedding!
Many times while in Chicago, I would go to the 6 pm Wed night service at 17th Church and hear Lois as the Reader. And her husband was there, assuming it was Donald. Mostly, I attend 8th Church when in Chicago, (for Christmas).

  23. Thank you all for your contributions. I no longer feel alone but rejoice in being with a community of right thinkers,
    Mary Ellen
